They'll drum me out of the honor corps..

I gave into temptation and ordered a P4 2.4C and an Asus P4P800 Deluxe today. The RAM for it got here today. WTH happened to me? I was gonna go with an Athlon64 system, but after watching two brand new mainboards and two spanking new Athlon XP2400+'s die over the last three days, I plumb got attitudinal. My last Intel box was a P3-600, it's been AMD all the way for years. Sorry Jerry, AMD let me down.

You've got to go with your experience, nothing else makes much sense.

Switching sides are we!!!

Well bring er up to 3400MHz and we'll forgive you

You sure you would not prefer a 2.6C though. Little difference in price and has a higher multiplier?

Must admit if not for the high cost, I would have given in to buying one of those P4c's and a 865PE boards myself.

Naah, I'm not going to overclock the new rig. More heresy, have I no shame? Besides, I bought un-OCable RAM. I'm not even certain that this PC-3200 Buffalo with Asus/Intel approved Samsung mem chips will work at stock. Eep.
An Asus nForce board died on me recently. It's a Micro-ATX, I had to go cheap at the time. The RAM was too close to the CPU, it's always something. All other Asus m'boards I've used over the years have been solid gold. Hoping that the new one isn't a lemon.

Two inexpensive mainboards for Athlon XP's died very quickly this week. ECS has sold me excellent motherboards until recently. It's not a shock that the low end Chaintech went poof.

I've been listening to 60mm Delta Screamers for years. It'll suck not hearing their dulcet song in my new A Box. Not to worry, the B Box will serenade me with that whine from hell. Old habits die hard, neither of my AMD boxes is OC'd. Overcool 'em anyway, that's my philosophy. Then again, overcooling Athlons is quite difficult to do.

With the run of luck (or absence thereof) you have been having, I guess I would not be in the mood for any tweaking myself.

It's been really weird. AMD is a little rough around the edges, but I've never seen components die like they have lately!
I hope that this string of bad luck stops before it's time to build the new P4 box. Gulp.

And you may find it very difficult to cool the new P4 C's....Remember, that Asus is known to give about 10-12c lower temps than actual. Kind of opposite the old A7A266 that read about 15c too high.

I tried a P4C 2.4 (zipping up the flame suit). Great chip. My friend and I brought it to 3GHz with a simple 5:4 (fsb:mem) adjustment, upped the vcore to 1.575 (from 1.525) and all went well. Stock cooler, generic psu and all.

I go with AMD because the price is right, but I really can't fault the Intel chips...

This is such good news. I've never seen the HSF arrangement of a P4. If the stock cooling can't do the job well enough, will a standard size fan fit the HS? I have an 80mm ~50 cfm and a 80mm 69(?) cfm Delta. Am hoping to avoid the Delta.

Remember, I won't OC this. I hope.

The P4 3.2 used a different heatsink I am told. The one with the 2.4C was all Aluminum, the one with the 3.2 has a copper base I think.

Why are we talking about heat

2.4GHz + 4:5 (mem/fsb) + a tad more vocre = 3.0GHz
Push up the DDR400 to 420 = 3.15GHz
Push up the DDR400 to 433 = you get the idea.

I forgot, we are not going to oveclock the chip

Am wondering what will take longer, me completing my first Folding@home work unit or you breaking your resolution

You cannot change your nature, no matter how hard you try

Thank you for posting the pics, ral! Looks like a new HSF from the ground up must be bought if the stock one isn't up to the job. Hoping that stock will be fine for operation at stock.

The stock fan is the for the 2.4C is the same as the one shipped with the higher end models. Only the 3.2C and maybe the 3.0C (have not seen one) has a differne HSF.

It will do fine even for above stock speeds.... much higher than stock speeds....

Ever seen 3000MHz posted on the screen at boot? You gotta see it, you wanna see it... he he.

Okay enough. 2.4GHz/800FSB/865PE (6.4GB dual channel-HT) is probably more than enough for any real world use

Intel stock coolers are way sufficent for stock speeds and some. They tend to overspec them rather than amd's underspec'd ones.
I got way over 3Ghz out of my 2.4 on it, i changed it thinking that was what was holding me back and it wasnt i could go any faster with a full copper sink.
As for having slow ram that doesnt matter, there are lots of dividers that allow you to crank up the fsb whilst keeping the ram down.
You could run your cpu at 300fsb (1200 effective) and yet the ram at ddr400 still if you wanted to.
