Intel drops Desktop pricing!

Written by Daniel
Friday, 28 July 2006
Intel officially cuts desktop CPU prices
Jessie Shen, DigiTimes.com, Taipei [Friday 28 July 2006]

Intel has officially announced its desktop processor price reductions that had been expected since the middle of the second quarter.

Although most processor models saw their prices being slashed, several processors did not have their price changed, including the LGA-775 Intel Pentium Extreme Edition (965 and 955), Pentium D (840 and 830), Pentium 4 (670, 660, 650, 641, 571, 561, 551, 521) and the MPGA-478 Celeron D (335, 330).

The chip giant also included new models in its pricing list including the Pentium D 805 and 945 and the Pentium 4 524

You have no idea how close I came to falling for it.

I wanted a conroe, and given the shortage was looking at a conroe compatible mobo, and a 915 as a temporary CPU. THe problem is, heat is actually my #1 reason for wanting an upgrade, and the 915, while a great bang for the buck overclocker, generates MORE heat than my prescott.... It is essentially 2 prescotts on a single fab with a die shrink.

Ya see how that works, they lower prices, we scramble to find better cooling that more than makes up for the cost savings! ":O}

Thanks for the reminder Steve! Be alert people! This IS Intel we're dealing with! ":O}

That sounds pretty bad especially living in such a hot environment you can't be having already hot components being exposed all the time. I have a Celeron D 'Prescott' and that creates too much heat i have to use 120mm fans at stock during the summer...crazy!

SteveI,
What prescott do you have ? as the presler core is quite abit more than just two prescotts and a die shrink! for starters its two ceder mill chips.

Most prescotts have a TDP in excess of 100w, the smithfields (800 series) were way up in the 130w's but the new 900 series preslers are much cooler. The C1 and D0 steppings of the lower end chips run in at 95W.
My 930 (C1) when running at 4GHz with both cores fully loaded only warms upto 52C !

The conroe may only kick at 65W but its been rumored to run just as warm due to the physical die size being smaller.

65nm has solved a fair few problems for intel, the chips do run alot cooler than the 90nm's and alot faster as well.

Go for the ones with '05A' spec as thats the new C1/D0 steppings which drop the power from 130w to 95w on the high end chips

I think mine is the latest revision S478, D0. It has 1 meg of cache, 3.0.

I runs about 10c cooler than earlier revisions, and I was generalizing a bit on the preslers. Of course there is technically more than just sticking 2 prescotts together, but at the end of the day, the preslers still run too hot. The only way to keep the temp down is avoid overclocking it (like that's about to happen).

OTOH, I am not ashamed to say I am very jealous of your new rig... I will have to content myself with rig envy for the next few months until I am ready to upgrade most of my home lan... I figure 2 new conroes, and my 2 s939 machines can go dually. With that in mind, $$$ is the key.

The last prescott stepping on socket 478 was E0, and was known as a P4 'E' it had a tdp of 89w which is just under the 930's 95w. Prices on the old chips are still falling fast

You're killing me keith!
I'm trying my best to be patient here... on one hand, i'm jonesin' to rip apart my main rig and upgrade. Given shortages, and my desire to go for the 10x200 conroe due out at end of year, I want to hold back.

If I go with the 915 (+HS), a new conroe compatible mobo (like the gigabyte), new gfx and DDR2, it will quel the urge. I'm looking at about $500 for a temporary upgrade. ... but the potential of 2 4ghz cores is tempting.

Do you think it is worthwhile?
