Fedora 10...another failed courtship?

I Dl'ed the iso, clicked on it (I'm in Fedora 8) My Fedora default Burner popped up and burned the ISO. I reboot to give it a try and I get a Linux message saying it can't find the CD/DVD player it is on!

But they give me a URL for this contingency!

So I write it out and go there! Looks promising with a little help from my friends but when I go to dl the app that will make my life worth living....I can't reach the site...

Help and or observation are welcome! We could start by talking about why Fedora 7 installs fine on my boxes but 9 and 10 can not!! In fact it's gone from I can't install graphically with your Nvidia card to I can't find my ass with both hands! TIA! ":O}

I'll check back tomorrow when I'll be in a better mood for frustration...":O}

Try enabling AHCI for the ide controller in the bios. Should get you going for F10, but will create an issue when you try to boot into Win2K. To boot into Windows you will have to disable AHCI or install the AHCI drivers for Win2K.

Sorry Cliff! Who looks on the MAIN BIOS page for these things!? ":O}

Here's what's up. I've been using a Sil, PCI, IDE card for my CD/DVD and Hard drives. To to get up (which I haven't) I diconnected mt DVD from my Sil card and plugged into the "Marvell" IDE on board. Turned on ACHI and gave it a try. I got this message w

ISOLINUX Could not find Kernel Image: Linux

So I hooked up my USB DVD burner to this box and gave that at try same message.

So I took a pic of my install disk contents for you enjoyment.":O}

BTW before I tried the marvel ACHI thingy (Which doesn't work in windows 2000, but does in Fedora.

Hmmm pic won't upload...I'll look about and see why...":O}

I found some posts with people having problems with the Marvell Controller, one post mentions a custom initrc so I will look into further and see what I can come up with..

Glad you got it to work.

I have F10 installed on my secondary rig, I haven't much time to play with it but from what I've seen so far it is far better than F8.

I did the upgrade, man! you select upgrade and that's IT! After a lengthy install/upgrade you just reboot to 10. Where there's ANOTHER big fat update for, among other things, your Nvidia and sound drivers waiting....downloading this now. ":O}

Once you get your laptops all set up, let me know how the power save options work out. I have two laptops, same basic hardware, Gentoo on both, running the same 2.6.23 tux_on_ice kernel. One functions perfect, the other does just fine until suspend to ram, then it will not wake for some reason. I've tried every solution I could find and every one I could think of to no avail.

Its a nice build, very nice in fact. Finally got to put it on an intel laptop and try out kernel based mode setting. All I can say is wow. If Nvidia gets around to open sourcing one day then I can't wait to see it every time I boot.

The new Fedora has introduced "Plymouth" to replace the old redhat graphical boot. Literally, you turn the computer on, and straght after the bios, you go to a hardware accelerated fully graphical boot screen until fedora is ready to log you in.

Have a look at this youtube video: YouTube - Fedora - Plymotuth [Solar Version - The final version]

That is genuinely what you see. Straight from BIOS into a graphical eye candy type boot process. The sun down in the bottom right of the screen kind of explodes with solar storms and stuff and it just looks amazing.

I have no doubt Ubuntu and others will adopt something similar soon, it just looks so slick and professional, more like starting a playstation 3 than starting a computer.

Boot speed is good, better than it was, but still theres some room for improvement. The new gnome is solid, everything feels alot more firm and smooth, much less experimental stuff than Fedora 9, definately more like something they'd fork RHEL 6 off of.

So yea, much better than 9 (not just because its newer but because if feels like a more solid release, and I was never happy with 9).

Incidentally, I did my upgrade via yum, and for the first time, it worked flawlessly. The entire procedure was a matter of downloading the Fedora 10 release rpm, and then typing yum upgrade at the command line.

The whole OS upgrade was done in the background while I worked on the computer, took about 4 hours (including downloading 3GB of packages in teh background) and when it was finished, I just rebooted and it was fine.

Other related Plymouth news:

[Phoronix] The KMS, Plymouth Experience In Fedora 10

That's phoronix's take on it. They seam about as impressed as I was. This is a seriously cool new project.

The Ubuntu devs were impressed enough to make some time for it on their calendar even though its a RedHat project: [Phoronix] Plymouth To Replace USplash In Ubuntu?

But yea, things like Plymouth are an example of open source and big business working together well. Redhat saw a need for something drastic that would have taken years to perfect if it was community based, so they put some professional software engineers on the job developing it, pushed it out the door in a very polished form in a short amount of time, and now its likely that once everyone's seen it and tried it out, Plymouth will spread around many other linux distros and maybe become a standard feature of a GNU/Linux OS.

Really, really, need Nvidia to pull their thumbs out though. Plymouth will work on intel and ATI/AMD graphics cards with their open source drivers but not on Nvidia cards.

If ATI and Intel can do it, Nvidia has no excuse not to.

Ok, is this only for laptop as I AM confused...I see something quite different at boot!

I see a two tone blue line (Light and dark blue) marching across the bottom of my monitor screen. as they progress across the screen the pull a white line behind them, or the line turns to white as it progresses toward a "Fedora" written at the RT bottom side of the screen...when it reaches the "Fedora" your booted. You can also hit the "esc" key and watch everything boot with a "OK" or "warring"

At desktop I briefly see a non animated Blue sun(?) then my desktop background art kicks in.

I demand an explanation!! LOL

OK! MY Bad (as usual!)

This Is like Chrismas for me, I was in 8 while everyone else got to wade through 9,....10 was a long time in coming for me! "O}
