Latest kernel update has no issues that I can find. Should be okay to update on your end Daniel.

I would recommend setting a different password for root though. Doesn't do much good to use sudo for security purposes if the password for root is the same as the user.

Ok, ya see...I'm just not getting this! Is 'Daniel" the user? Where and how do I set a password for root? The only password on this machine is the one at install setup...

sorry to be so clueless this is all a big surprize to me...I thought I had a basic understaning of this...and I really don't.

Thanks Cliff, I do the update.

Daniel is the user, root is root. We want to work as root as little as possible because we don't want others to have the opportunity to work as root, whether they be inside or outside our homes.

To change the password for root, open a terminal and su to root.

Then type
Code:
passwd
enter the new password
then enter it again.

EDIT: did some exploring...Su/root password in terminal changed, if I wasn't auto logged in would that password at boot have remained the same?

[Daniel@localhost ~]$ su
Password:
[root@localhost Daniel]# passwd
Changing password for user root.
New UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:
passwd: all authentication tokens updated successfully.
[root@localhost Daniel]#

The password for the account that auto logins remains the same.

It is basically the same as creating a user account in Windows, except it is the default action in linux to create a user account. Linux makes great use of permissions and elevated privileges by using groups and UID's.

Sudo is basically the same as "run as administrator" under Windows.

When you login as Daniel, you log in as a user. The groups a user is in determine what he can do within the OS. Let's say you want to create a new user for a friend but do not want them having elevated privileges but do want him to be able to other things. You would leave him out of the wheel group so he could not su to root, and not create a line in the sudoers file for him, but you could add him to the video, audio, cdrom groups so he could use those.
