Fedora "how 2" questions...

Hi guys. I need to learn the following...

1. How to properly delete old programs not in use? In General AND under Wine...when wine won't delete them? (Wine pretends to delete them but when the un-install is over...there they are!

2. How do I set Fedora to auto login? I've done this in the past and now can not figure out how I did it!!":O}

3. Does any one know of an easy to use Linux disk defragmenter (free much preferred, but interested in commercial utilities as well...??)

4. I have a 4 gig Corsair "Flash Voyager" Which I just plug in to a USB and it opens a window I can drag and drop to...so far so good. I like it so much I bough a 16 gig Voyager! ($20.00 with rebate at Newegg) But Fedora "Can't mount the drive from this location" At least it wouldn't before...now it doesn't seem to register with the system at all...I hot swap back and forth between the 16 and the 4 gig...it always sees the 4 gig...? ah help I guess...? Is the 16 gig borked or does it require different handling?

Please feel free to add your questions and answers to mine! ":O}

The disk defrag thing pretty much doesn't exist for the fact that it isn't needed.

I have never had much luck uninstalling programs under wine with the wine unistaller. Most of the time it requires manual deletion of the program along with deleting the registry keys and menu items.

Haven't used Gnome in a while, but it should still come with gdmsetup:
Code:
su
root passwd
gdmsetup
Should bring up a tabbed menu that you can use to set the options.

As dsio mentioned, defrag software is not needed in linux.

It is no doubt as you say, defrrag not needed...what got me going on this was a post by Aedan where in he mentioned that Linux drives do fragment...I mistakenly assumed that this mattered as it does in MS OS's. thanks!

I wouldn't say that defragging doesn't matter, but it's a question of whether the gain is worth the effort.

On modern operating systems with modern file systems (and this includes NTFS), fragmentation can and does occur. However, the file system driver will generally reorder requests for data services (remember, modern operating systems are multitasking, and may in fact have many read and write requests 'in flight' for multiple applications on multiple files at the same time) to minimize head movement. Does this take time? Of course, but the few thousand CPU cycles it takes at today's CPU speeds are minuscule compared to the amount of time it takes to move a drive head even one track. As a result, the reordering of the requests will tend to minimize the effects of the fragmentation. In addition, modern operating systems also implement file system caching algorithms, which tend to both minimize fragmentation itself, and to minimize the effects of fragmentation, both by 'reading ahead' in anticipation of data requests yet to come, and by 'delayed writes' of data being sent back to the disk, in order to bundle as many transactions together in one operation as possible.

Long and short, whether you are using NTFS on WindowsXP or JFS on Linux, fragmentation is not nearly the issue it used to be, particularly under DOS-based OSen using FAT and its derivatives.

Directions were stolen from wordpress.com so don't blame me if they don't work

Code:
sudo gedit /etc/gdm/gdm.schemas
Locate this section in the configuration file, change the word false to true

Code:
`<schema>
<key>daemon/AutomaticLoginEnable</key>
<signature>b</signature>
<default>false</default>
</schema>`
Then add your username between the the 2 <default> lines in the folliowing section on the same page.

Code:
`<schema>
<key>daemon/AutomaticLogin</key>
<signature>s</signature>
<default>put your username here</default>
</schema>`
