OK. First please check that Patti's machine is still on IP 192.168.0.4

Then can you do:

gedit /var/log/cups/error_log

And paste up the output for both yours and Patti's machine.
(you may need to su to root for this)

Many thanks. Most revealing.

Could I have a look at two more files on Patti's machine, please?

/var/log/cups/access_log
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf

I have a suspicion that the CUPS web interface didn't add the appropriate line into cupsd.conf allowing connections from places other than localhost, as it was supposed to do. Which is irritating.

As the access_log tends to be a large file, could I just have the last few hours' report?

D'oh, my bad. I should have given you complete instructions rather than half-arsed ones:

Code:
su
gedit /var/log/cups/access_log
Then paste the last day's worth of logfile.

And:
Code:
gedit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
and copy the whole thing into a post.

And there we have it:
Code:
# Only listen for connections from the local machine.
Listen localhost:631
Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock
A little google-work wrt Fedora and CUPS suggests that Fedora tries to look after its users a little bit, and prevent certain changes to certain config files.

Before you do anything else, please back up your cupsd.conf file thus:
Code:
sudo cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.backup

Sorry for the delay in looking at this thread this evening. I've been fiddling about with my own system's kernel a little.

Right, AFTER you have backed up your file, /etc/cups/cupsd.conf as described in the last post, do the following:

Code:
su
gedit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
Select all the text in the text file and delete it. Don't save yet.

Make sure there are no spaces in front of the text on the first line, then save.

Restart cups thus: (still as root)
Code:
/etc/init.d/cups restart
Now on Patti's machine print something to verify that I've not broken the local configuration. (See, this is why it's good to keep backups of known-working files).

Then try to print from Daniel's machine.

If it doesn't work then I'll need to see the error logs again.

If it does work, save a copy of the config on Patti's machine, as described before:
Code:
sudo cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.backup.sharing

I'm rather pleased about that

All it did was make a copy of the existing configuration file, so that we can put things back the way they were if anything goes wrong.

While you were away I tried:

[root@localhost Patti]# sudo
usage: sudo -h | -K | -k | -L | -l | -V | -v
usage: sudo [-bEHPS] [-r role] [-p prompt] [-t type] [-u username|#uid]
[VAR=value] {-i | -s | <command>}
usage: sudo -e [-S] [-p prompt] [-u username|#uid] file ...
[root@localhost Patti]# cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.backup
cp: overwrite `/etc/cups/cupsd.conf.backup'? y
[root@localhost Patti]#

Hope I didn't mess you up!

Patti's machine still prints. The printer on my machine is still listed as "May not be connected"

Here are Patti's error logs:

Hmm... methinks I made a mistake in the earlier printer instructions. I've only just got back to using Linux after perhaps 4 years of WinXP only... *sigh*

Right, on Patti's computer, please go to:
Code:
http://localhost:631
Which is the CUPS control panel.

Click on Manage Printers.

Please send me a screenshot of that page.
