Need help in creating a home network ...so I can use our printer...?

Patti has a printer and Daniel can/t be happy unless he has one two! Or at lest can access Patti's! ":O}

How does one set up a home network in Fedora and gain printer access? TIA!

Does Fedora 10 use the CUPS print server? If so it's a doddle to set up a Linux to Linux print share of the HP DeskJet 722c you configured in another thread.

By coincidence I used to own an HP DeskJet 720c, shared in various ways over its long and eventful life.

Ah good stuff. I recall SuSE used to have a perverse fascination with LPR/LPRng and thought it worth checking.

I've been thinking about this and it seems the need for Patti and I to net work out computers is greatly reduced by having a thumb drive.... Patti's computer sits right behind me! I just pull it out of my USB thumb drive and stick it in to her USB slot and can pretty much transfer anything up to 16 gigs to be printed....

(This seems ample for my needs ":O}

So if this isn't a easy one...we might want to think of something better to do? ":O}

I was just interested how the printer was connected her box. I kinda figured it would be parallel. I'm SURE there is a way to share it. I might have to fire up one of my linux boxes and figure it out for ya.

It won't be too much trouble to set up a network and share a printer. I am loaning some processor power to a friend in California for a few days, so once my rig comes down off of 99% CPU usage and I can boot into fedora I will see what it takes to get you set up.

Why wait?

EDIT:: I made a big assumption in the following that you're both sharing internet access through the same router. If so then you already have all you need for the "home network", and just need to connect the printer. Thus:

Screenshot deluge will follow. This method is universal across distributions and not Fedora-specific. I used it to share a DeskJet 720c (dearly departed) on a Gentoo host with various clients (Mandrake, SuSE and WindowsXP, after some hammer-work).

First up on Patti's machine, open up a web browser and copy/paste or type in the web address:

Code:
http://localhost:631
This should give you the CUPS web control panel, and should look like this:

Click on the "Printers" tab to bring up printer management for Patti's newly-configured printer.

See the button in the middle of the screen marked, "Publish Printer"? Click that.

If you don't see "Publish Printer" but "Unpublish Printer" then that printer is already set up for sharing. Don't click "Unpublish Printer".

Now you're done with Patti's box. Move back to your own.

Log into

Code:
http://localhost:631
Click the "Add Printer" button to get to the "Add Printer" screen. In the screenshot below, I've already suggested what you should fill in for the three boxes. To aid copy/paste efforts:

HPDeskJet722c
Patti's Computer
HPDeskJet722c

Then click "Continue"

The next screen asks what connection type you use:

Internet Printing Protocol (ipp)

Thus:

Click "Continue"

The next screen asks where the printer is on the internet. Yes, given the correct router setup I could happily print to your printer

I've assumed that you haven't properly set up host names and that you still prefer static IPs to dynamic. We'll need to set host names if you use dynamic IPs.

The format for printer addresses is:

Code:
ipp://<patti's computer IP>/ipp/
Thus:

Continue on to the next: defining the printer driver.

First off, download the .ppd file ccperf provided to a convenient location. Then click "Browse" on the "Or provide a PPD file" dialogue. Choose that .ppd file and hit "ok".

Then click "Add Printer"

EDIT:: At this point it may ask for a password. If it does, use the username "root" and root password. There is a note to this effect on the CUPS local "home" page, but it's quite easily overlooked. (I did).

Regardless of whether it worked or not, CUPS will report "Printer successfully added" and give you a configuration options screen. Set your paper size and options, then click "Set Printer Options".

Finally you get this screen. Try to print a test page. If it worked, yay. If not, please report what happened.
