I was checking out some of the latest and greatest alpha packages linux had to offer and ran into one that wouldn't work. I don't remember the exact version number but I do remember it ending in r21. So we'll just say .0.8.7-r21

I'm sitting at my rig with a jack and coke, and this package is just giving me fits. I look up the developer and find him on chat with the sole purpose of having a little fun.

Me: 21 attempts and this package is still screwed up?

Dev: It's an alpha, if you don't like it, don't use it!

Me: I can't use it, it's broken. You've known it was broken for the last 21 attempts to fix it. (then I go make me another jack and coke while I laugh)

Dev: I don't do this for a living.

Me: It's hard to find someone to pay you for stuff that doesn't work.

Dev: (cannot be repeated)

Me: You spelled "mother" wrong, could be an indication of what's wrong with your code.

Dev: (cannot be repeated)

Me: Maybe you should get rid of the mold in your mother's basement, at 47 I imagine it has taken a toll on you.

Dev: Leave me alone.. If you can do better, then do so.

Me: I've had it fixed since r7.

Dev: Bull%^$#.

Me: I'm just busting your balls, get away from the keyboard and go have a beer, should see my bug report by the time you get back. Hope it helps.

Dev: I hate people!

Me: Me too.
Your a cruel savage and I'm proud to know you! ":O}

Define "like to play". Do you just want to take a look at another distribution without moving too far out of your comfort zone? Or... Do you want to see something completely different than what your used to?

LOL.

I'd like to make this thing fit on a CD so it wouldn't be too much for people to download or torrent.

What apps do you use on a daily basis?

Firefox, Thunderbird, Real Player, Rhythmbox, the "Take screen shot " appy, Adobe Reader, or something like, The text editor for creating files. That's about it I think, looking around I don't see anything else I use.

Would be great if it handled Nvidia , flash and 5.1 sound without tears...":O} You know thinking about it...just about anything the gives me these things without increasing the need for me to use terminal to much over what I do now...is Probably going to be OK for me...so there's no real reason for you not to have some fun as well in making this! The remastering software I mentioned, and that Cliff may be using to make this distro, will handle Flash, Java, and I see no reason to think it won't handle your sound drivers. But it won't install Nvidia; you will have to do it yourself manually after installing the OS.

I did find this: if the Nvidia drivers and Compiz, Emerald, Beryl (or whatever compositor/decorator) is running on the base machine when the cd is made, when you install to the target machine they will not work. However, once you install the Nvidia driver everything else magically comes to life, and does not require reinstall.

It will be a Debian based distribution and I will use remastersys to put it together. Debian gives a solid base with just about every package you would ever need in their repositories, plus I am comfortable enough with Debian that I would run it as my main OS. I run Debian Etch daily on one of my rigs. I attached a screenshot just to give you an idea of the direction I am moving in.

While it will support all of the things you have mentioned, Daniel, Real Player, Flash, Adobe Reader, Nvidia drivers are non-free (closed source / licensed) software so will not be included in the distribution. Remember "Free as in Freedom" not as in lunch.

I will however provide a tutorial on how to install all of the things you need and / or provide open source alternatives.

Looks nice. Can't tell for sure if that's Gnome or Xfce, though. I see Thunar in the dock/panel, so I'm thinking Xfce, but the menu looks like Gnome...No visible panels could be either one...what have we got there?

It's actually Enlightenment DR-17, there are some gnome and Xfce components installed though.

I've had a little time to work on the project. Should have something for people to take a look at by the middle of next week. It will be a pretty lean set of packages at first, I will add more after I get a feel for what's needed from people.

I decided to use a stripped down ubuntu-server as the base and add packages from there.

I'm going to have to start over my project. A couple of packages I wanted to use just aren't ready for primetime and it throws a wrench in the whole deal.

If you want to try a nice clean distro for awhile until I get something going, I can highly recommend Linux Mint. I'm running it on all but one of my rigs and love it..

Download - Linux Mint

I hear you on the arm deal. My shoulder has been giving me fits lately. Sleeping in a recliner is starting to get old though.. Such is life...

I think you will be right at home with Mint. It's pretty straight forward and has the programs you are already used to..
