Mirroring text

Point of curiousity here. I've read and heard that many people with dyslexia have a method they use for accurately reading difficult to read text (particularly in the case of bad cursive fonts or small print) in that they use a mirror to read the reflected text, which allows them to read from right to left, and forces their focus on each letter more than reading normally left to right.

Is this at all the case? and if so, would it be applicable to use on a computer?

Was just looking at various Compiz plugins and thinking how easily Compiz could be used to create something like that if it was beneficial.

Ok, almost all my info on this is decades out of date... That said:

There is more than one ailment that falls under the name of dyslexia. What used to be referred to as "Fixed" dyslexia or "Mirror vision" were helped, or so I've read, by placing a mirror above the text, slanting it so the reverse writing could be seen.

People with mirror vision have a fixed, although reversed view of print. But dyslexia is not confined to vision, it can (with me does) effect the way (order in which I receive) a list of spoken instructions as well. I receive them scrambled. The same with my vision, rather than reversed and fixed, I see and hear things out of order. After 60 years of this I've gotten pretty good at figuring out which SHOULD come first. But fat lot of help this is with spelling and numbers! No clues as to what should be firest or second...over the years I've seen a great deal of improvement, but, I'll never spell well or master math.

Example:

A a child (7-9) I live one block in a straight line from my grade school. Same side of the street, I it was on a small hill or I could have seen my home from school. It took me on average several hours each day to find my way home ( My younger brother or mother took there,) I got home alone...Every day was a NEW day for me! The first day":O}

I've lived for years in houses I could not find my way to without written instruction to get there. I could go to the store from where I live now (For 7 months) and not be able to find my way home.

I don't know what percentage are "Fixed" dyslectics and how many are as I am. I do know that severity varies from person to person.

I hope this helps you with your idea dsio. It might indeed help quite a few!

I realized last night that I had told this story several times in the forums over the years... I wondered why this particular part of my past is still so fresh...

I think it's because I can't fathom anyone not being able to find their way home! I, to this day don't understand the infirmity that prevented me from finding my way home... Why houses change position on my street over the years. How after 12 years I was still seeing houses in places very different from where I remembered them being...I've lived my life in a confusion of places, yet got to see what many have not...None of us know where we are nor where we are going, the best we can do is go in humility and seeking grace...

Getting back to the initial post, do you think such a thing would be worth suggesting to the Compiz devs as an accessibility feature?

From a Dyslexia point of view? I don't know. But you have had a good idea and a good impulse, see it thought to the other side. It might work wonders for some!":O}

Maybe a modification of the magnifying glass plugin would be better so that those for whom it works can flip select areas of text rather than all of it, and pictures, and have to flip their brain to use the mouse.

That would in effect give them their mirror above the text! Excellent . I could see working ":O}

Daniel, is it possible to have a left-right confusion? I mean, do some folks have a problem whereby they initially attempt to do things with the wrong hand?

For example, would some people reach for a pencil with their opposite hand and try to begin writing with it before realizing it was in the wrong hand? Or perhaps click with the wrong mouse button?

I kinda keep an eye open for such oddities, having been one and all...":O}

I've never come across that, but I've come across so many different departures from the norm, that I think nearly anything possible. To this day I hesitate when told to go left or right. ..and I think I was in 4th or 5th grade before I figured out that my left is the hand I throw with and didn't then have to fake throwing every time to see which was my throwing arm (I'm left handed due to a pact my mother made with the devil...":O}

But I always...thank god... reached with the hand I intended to...I think you'd probably end up losing to many digits for that to be a permeate condition...diminishing returns as it were...":O}

(If you spend your life lost...you develop a sense of humour or go mad...usually both...":O}
