Ubuntu's next wave: Open server, closed cloud

Written by Daniel

I admit that I nearly got caught up in my former colleague James Urquhart's excellent analysis of Canonical's Ubuntu 9.10 release, code-named Karmic Koala.

I saw the word "open" laced heavily through the post, and given Canonical's commitment to fully open-source Ubuntu experience, I played along.
Ubuntu in the clouds

But something doesn't quite fit in Canonical's story. [Front page...]

they need not live in darkness...

Yet we remain on the shore of what we know."

Terrible name, but will be a good OS. Ubuntu does tend to go from strength to strength and seams to be willing to work with others as well (ie. they are planning to use Red Hat's Plymouth boot in the future).

For those that don't know about it, Ubuntu is funded and backed by Canonical, which is owned by South African businessman Mark Shuttleworth. While many wealthy men devote chunks of money to charitable causes, the 10 million or so that Mark has put into Canonical and Ubuntu seams to be some of the best spent charity money ever. He's managed to do such a great deal with a hands on approach to his undertaking and may have made a mark on the world in a way that most philanthropists never will.
