Dude! After all the help you've given me the lest I can do is see this though. If you want to keep on I'm your guy.... And no doubt this will come up again until we solve it.

I left off here, without carry out Gizmo's suggestion... should I start with this or have you some where else to go with this?

Gizmo:

Quote:
Alternatively, you can pop a terminal, su to root, and then type:

service iptables stop

Which will do the same thing.

Gizmo's suggestion is correct, disable iptables then see if you can connect to Patti's box.

This may be nothing... but I want to remind you that Patti's box has a Fedora that I built on my machine , then moved the Hard drive over to her machine....At login it still posts Daniel Edgar, You click on that name, give her password and it brings up Patti's desktop...as I say a left over from when the drive was mine. almost everything else comes up with
patti's name on it... just wondering if this could be biting us in the as as we try for a connection...?

You did:

Code:
sudo su
which is not what I said. Open a terminal window and type the following:

Code:
sudo service iptables stop
when it asks, give it YOUR password (not the root password).

To enable the firewall again, type the following:

Code:
sudo service iptables start

Hope that helps.

Sorry... I'm a bit lost... once I make the needed correction... what should I do to check to see if this works...I don't know where to access the working network once it's up....?

It must be because it's an UNHOLY pain!

Ok, do this:

Code:
su -
When it prompts, enter your ROOT password.

Then type in this:

Code:
service iptables stop
If that still gives you the 'unrecognized service' message, then do this:

Code:
ls -l /etc/init.d
and post the results back here.

I ONLY have TWO passwords on this system, Tried both 3 or 4 times!

One of my passwords handles the login (Now auto login) the other handles systems updates.... about all I know for sure is that I know my two passwords and that they work elsewhere in the system!

I think I know what's going on. There was a thread where Daniel was trying to get his printer working across the network. It looks like it was given up on, but there are many network config files that have been changed or replaced. I will go back through that thread and see what needs to be done.

I believe in our attempts to make using linux easier on Daniel, we (I) have not done him justice. We have done things we would normally never do to a linux install, all just to make it easy on Daniel, unfortunately it has made it near impossible to support the cobbled together OS.

The first thing I believe needs to be in place is a proper partitioning scheme. Not just for the OS but also a place where Daniel can move files to on each computer. (Aids in being able to get a computer back to the way it was after a clean install.)

Which OS do you spend most of your time in? Mint or Fedora?

Patti's rig is a mess, so do you have a spare hard drive to throw in it so we can move some files around?

Lately it's been Mint... but truth is I'm still more comfortable in Fedora...can't really say which I prefer...yet....but mostly I've been booting Mint... like today.":O}

We really can't play to much with Patti's box as she's in the middle of a massive no holds bared job hunt and needs access at different times of day and at night....

I'm using tree drives now in my box. Fedora, my (Just in case second Fedora clone) and my mint drive. Fedora and mint are both backed up to my 1 Gig external SATA drive. All other drives are hooked up through PCI, IDE cards.

We can play with one of my two Fedora drives...?

But to really get into Patti's stuff we will need to wait for her to find work.
