The problem isn't that our copy of the file is corrupt: the problem is that for some reason you are getting something from us that your browser doesn't like, and that seems to apply to both F11 and F12, which is very odd.

I've made the actual file available at http://www.aoafiles.com/Fedora-12-i386-DVD.iso

If you could download that and tell me if that has problems or not, that would help me. As that is a direct link, that file is served directly by apache without any intervention by any PHP code that I have written.
Sorry I missed this post... I'll kill my upload and try your download... LOL

/home/daniel/DOWNLOADS/Fedora-12-i386-DVD.iso.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.

Try again later, or contact the server administrator.

SORRY!

Ok, I'd like for you to try the following experiments, if you don't mind:

First, open a terminal window, and paste the following code into it (do NOT su):
Quote:
wget -S -U 'Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091105 Fedora/3.5.5-1.fc11 Firefox/3.5.5' 'http://files.aoaforums.com/Fedora-12-i386-DVD.iso'
This will start a download. As soon as you see a progress bar at the bottom of the screen (will take several seconds) hit Ctrl-C to cancel the download and paste the output of that command back here.

Now, do the same thing as above, using this code:
Quote:
wget -S -U 'Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091105 Fedora/3.5.5-1.fc11 Firefox/3.5.5' 'http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/releases/12/Fedora/i386/iso/Fedora-12-i386-DVD.iso'
Now, I realize the next part will be a real PITA, but I need you to download a random selection of files of dffierent sizes:
Fedora 12 i686 Live KDE CD ISO
Crysis Patch v1.1
Epson Artisan 710 Series Drivers and Utilities Combo Package - Network (64-bit)
HP Photosmart C4180 All-in-One Driver Version 7.0.1 for Windows
HD AC 97 Driver Version R1.99 for Windows Vista 32/64-bit
Apex Video to MP3 WMA WAV Converter Free Version 4.22
Opera 9.50 Build 9624 Beta
Preference v. 1.20

Let me know if any of those downloads fails. The files are sorted in order from largest to smallest, so maybe you might try the smallest one first. I'm interested in finding at what point (if any) downloads start working properly for you.

I grabbed the i386 dvd without issues. Firefox 3.5 in Gentoo. I'll try another and see what happens.

By multiple connections, do you mean downloading different files?

Most download managers implement multiple connections to download a single file in an effort to bypass bandwidth restrictions. In order to do this, they send a range request-header. We don't honor the range request-header. Unfortunately, every download manager that I've encountered is written so stupidly that it continuously pummels the server with range requests, even when I am explicitly returning 403 "Forbidden" responses. Most of them will send the request several times per second.

I personally think download managers are evil. Not so much because of what they are designed to to, but because they do it so badly.

To be fair, it may not be entirely the download manager's fault; it may be something the user has (mis)configured. Regardless, my feelings about them and the effects they have on the server are the same.

I can only conclude that the COMCAST proxying is somehow screwing with us.

Here's my guess:
Comcast has a proxy server sitting between them and the rest of the world. Its job is to act as a cache, so as to minimize traffic off Comcast's network to the rest of the world. This is smart for them to implement, because it reduces the amount of external bandwidth they consume, reduces their bandwidth overhead, and improves responsiveness to their customers (you).

Unfortunately, I'm guessing this cache is implemented on hardware that has a 2 GiB limit on the size of any particular file.

So, why does this screw AOA, but not the Fedora main site? Well, I'm guessing that either Comcast or Redhat have an agreement with FastSoft to mirror certain information, among which is the Fedora repository. The result is that when YOU request the F12 image, it gets redirected to a FastSoft server, which I'm betting lives on ComCast's network and doesn't go through that caching proxy I talked about earlier.

When <I> request that same file from Fedora, I get it directly from the Fedora site, not FastSoft.

As a result, downloads from Fedora work for you, but downloads from AOA don't. In the mean time, I'm not going through Comcast's proxy, so I don't have the issues with downloading from AOA that you do, but I also end up downloading from a different Fedora mirror than you do, even though I requested the exact same file.

Other than that, I'm stymied. Allowing for the differences introduced by the 302 redirect in your request to Fedora, there's not a nickel's worth of difference between the output from your requests and the output I got from mine.

If you don't mind one more download, maybe we can test my theory. Try getting this file: http://mirrordenver.fdcservers.net/f...x86_64-DVD.iso

That's the same file as ours, but rather than requesting it from the Fedora site and letting them redirect us to the best mirror, we are explicitly going to the mirror at the FDCServers' data center in Denver, which I'm betting isn't inside Comcast's network.

That would explain the behavior I saw. It's not a problem, things download just fine, but generally on large files it is a faster download with the multiple connections to the same file. The software I use in Windows will quit trying to make additional connections after n attempts, n being a user setting. I normally set it to 3 attempts. 3 is sufficient to know whether the server supports the connections or not. I agree that there is no need to pound the server incessantly with requests.

Now that I know we don't support them, I don't really need to use the manager.

That's the same file as ours, but rather than requesting it from the Fedora site and letting them redirect us to the best mirror, we are explicitly going to the mirror at the FDCServers' data center in Denver, which I'm betting isn't inside Comcast's network.
Just so you know:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.15) Gecko/2009102815 Linux Mint/7 (Gloria) Firefox/3.0.14

Downloading now...":O}

BTW... If your right... Is this why we need "Net Neutrality" ?
