Any Arch users here?

I installed Arch according to this guide-
How to Install Arch Linux - A simple, lightweight Linux distribution. - Softpedia

When I type in startx, it says command not found, so I'm not getting into the GUI.

Never mind. Apparently you have to install X and then get vid drivers, and yadda, yadda...
I don't know why people think this is "better".
Trying a different OS.

"Better" is a relative term. I run Arch and Gentoo, I do find them to be better for me but I am more than likely looking for something different than you in an OS.

The install routine for Arch will install only the base. You'd have to supplement that with a desktop, a window manager, decorator, etc etc.

THe reason that Arch is a "better" distro is that you can install what packages you want, and ONLY what packages you want. You make the choices and you build the system to do the work you need to do, without a lot of extra bloated pre-installed packages.

Sounds like Gentoo, just without the fun of compiling your own.

Yeah, that's both the benefit and the bane of Gentoo:

Benefit because you only have the software loaded that you actually need for whatever you are doing, and you can compile if specifically for your machine so you don't have any unnecessary bloat.

Bane because, well, you have to have enough of a clue about what you are doing to figure out what software and settings you need to make it all work.

You're not missing much. Even on a Core I7 @ 4.0, compiling is a pain in the butt. Too many programming languages, each with own set of dependencies and junk the author thought should be included in the build. By the time you get a decent OS compiled it's still far from being what I consider lean.

I no longer have the ambition to edit builds to my needs, so I just add more hard drive space and memory to accommodate the junk and take the build as is.

Life is too short to undo all the odd things that other people thought was a good idea...
