So install the Kernel and Kernel Header for the same 2.6.23.1-42.fc8 that I already have, right?
I'll give it a go.
If it doesn't work, maybe I'll at least eliminate that error.

Its very strange because they have been working fine for the last 2 years and I've been playing doom 3 & Enemy Territory Wolfenstein.

As for Radeon open source, I think they are default for my Fedora 8.
I didn't realize they were already installed, but when I try to activate them in the GUI, it doesn't do anything.

I have a whole bunch of updates for Fedora 8: 262 of em
I selected the ones for Xorg (which included some AMD/ATI stuff) and the kernel update to 2.6.26.8-57.fc8

so how does this affect the ati driver install?
I'll tell ya.... same error
But there are some more packages to update for the new kernel. No headers but there are devel packages.
I'll try those and then try again.
then I'll update all the updates and see what happens then

Installed Fedora 8 once again. The updates screwed up something and it wouldn't shutdown properly. This is one of the reasons I never update, because I have read too many posts about updates messing up the whole Operating System.
Everything is working fine now, but I have given up on the ATI drivers. Nothing has worked and 10 installs later with 2 Fedora Reinstalls, I have given up.

I can play games again in Fedora 8 thanks to Kaitain. He logged into my server and got the correct update packages, compiled the C+ packages and got the Catalyst Control Center working perfectly. I loaded up Doom3 and it even seems to run faster than I remembered.
Thanks Kaitain, you are a life saver!

I know there is a reason you are still running Fedora 8 but I can't find or remember it.

The main reason is that ATI doesn't support older video cards (Radeon 9600 pro) in Linux anymore. My server still uses AGP and if I upgrade to a newer Fedora I would mostly have to upgrade my hardware. Since I don't have any money and the server is mostly for running games via Terminal and is my data server, I'm happy with 8.

Also because of my "Lack of Experience & Knowledge" in Linux.
Since I have used it for almost 3 years and have at least 10 different game servers running through it, I never upgraded.

I could update booman anywhere up to F11 and still be able to use Catalyst drivers. ATi added support for up to X.org 7.4 to their legacy driver somewhere around the beginning of the year. Some sort of upgrade would probably help lingering issues with shutting down and ALSA.

I know that I am hesitating because I'm worried about having to start from scratch again.
Honestly I am pretty happy with the current condition on ye-ole-hardware. As I use the server maybe I'll find some other problems and have to "break down" and let you go ahead and upgrade.
I have read several articles about upgrading and all the broken packages/configs because of it. Specially some of Daniel's posts.
I really don't want to put you through 10 more hours of troubleshooting.

If you've got a spare hard drive, sling it in the box and I'll set it up for dual-booting F8 and F-whatever, (or whatever other distro takes your fancy).

It took somewhat less than 10 hours to do - a large chunk of the afternoon I was in the office and the remainder spent with family.
