Black Box

As I mentioned over here:

As I wrote the original message, I was already in the process of rebuilding said box, from a hardware perspective, anyway. When I say "rebuilding" I mean merging the least broken bits from a couple of ten year old boxes into a single, slightly undersized case. I'll post the spec when I get home, if anyone fancies a laugh/nostalgia moment.

Like many old and little-used skills, progress wasn't plain sailing...

Progress so far:
  • Removed 17 tonnes of dust and an unidentified sticky substance from all fins, fans and cooling surfaces.
  • Removed the spider
  • Lusted after the QNAP TS-412 and wondered if I could buy it with the spider.
  • Removed, cleaned and replaced the thermal goop under the heatsink
  • Replaced power supply, IDE and SATA cables, plus DVD drive with better quality examples from a different dead box.
  • Burned a new Gentoo minimal ISO.
  • Fired up the box. I forgot how loud this thing was!
  • Failed to boot the new Gentoo minimal ISO.
  • Powered down the box. Removed DVD drive, found jumper settings (remember them?) on the internet. Rebuilt box
  • Fired it up again, partitioned and set up the drives.
  • Downloaded hardened stage3 and portage snapshots and inflated them into their chroot.
  • Failed to emerge hardened-sources - portage bailed with "cannot allocate memory" error. Re-emerged portage. Hardened-sources emerged successfully.
  • End of Day 1

So (hopefully) tonight I'll finish setting up the kernel and base system so that it boots by itself: after that, SELinux setup (which will be interesting as my last efforts were a disaster), then trying to share a drive in a way both Windows and Linux understand. Baby steps...

... speaking of which, the box is behind the TV, which means it's probably now been fed a jam sandwich care of mini-K#2

TL-DR Kaitain in geek relapse shock!

Like....all my computing "skills" are old and little used, I see myself as a little kid following behind the grown ups and annoying them with questions I barley understand....

So...

I very much enjoy following you in your adventures.

That doesn't sound too bad for the first day on a ten year old box. Now, if you had a few of my favorite Asian geckos in there...

Heh. Every time you use the KB you have to do a sit-up. How novel.

Not a bad idea, that! I could do crunches while I compile, exercise while I emerge, replace portly with portage! Or just move the keyboard when not taking a photo... that's enough exercise for one day

Just remember that with portage-2.2 you can do 'sets' of reps.

Ugh. I'm really taking the joke too far now. Ignore me.

I'd forgotten about that USE. Thanks for flagging it up.

(In terms of the project, I left it compiling a kernel last night - no idea how it's fared.)

Thumbs up

"Burned a new Gentoo minimal ISO.

The above errors could've been avoided by simply installing Windows,

There I FIXED IT!!!

So like Window's would have come over to K's house and changed the jumpers on his DVD?

That's nice tech support...Still not worth the money...":O}

I FIXED YOUR FIX!

What chrisbard may not have noticed is that this hardware is more than 10 years old and is barely able to run W7 Basic. If I did run W7 basic, I'd be able to look at the desktop. In between screen refreshes. That is, every third Tuesday.

Now, if I wanted to actually use the thing... sorry cb... it's not going to work...

Oh, so it hit 20C?

Don't fret about it. It'll only last for a week anyhow. Did the sun come out, too?

You've gone native Thunderbird! You've lost touch with your northern roots! We LIKE to freeze! The sun burns our skin! Lest you forget, 20C is damn near 70F!!

And no need for sarcasum! Of course the sun didn't come out...or it would have burnt Kaitain to the ground!

Schoolgirls in a pub? Must be Manchester.

In MK it hit 28?C and full sunshine. Unfortunately it's an engineer's lot to be sealed in a sunless office all day, so I missed it. Hopefully I'll get to cremate some burgers at the weekend, before it no doubt starts raining again for the rest of the year.
