In point of fact, the server industry is moving towards 2.5" drives for high-performance applications owing to the fact that you can generally get more storage in the same space using 2.5" drives than you can with 3.5" drives.
Has SSD surpassed even the fastest mechanical drives yet? In speed and access time and what ever else we should consider when asking this question?

I know they cream the average drives, but what about the high end exotics?

I was reading today that there are quite a few Noble prizes behind Mechanical drives as well...

SSDs ANNHILIATE mechanical drives when it comes to I/OPS (I/O Operations Per Second). A single SSD can typically sustain performance that can only be touched by high-end RAID with many drives on mechanical systems.

Unfortunately, SSDs (even ones designed for server use) just aren't as robust as mechanical drives at the high end. The current approach seems to be to use a hybrid array, with SSDs doing the high-concurrency stuff, and mechanicals doing the bulk storage.

Dan, I'm totally IN with trying out Mint. My goal is to make it easy as possible to install & run games without having to jump through a bunch of hoops.
Wine is great, but I still have issues installing certain games.
So I would love to try Mint as a replacement to Windows.

My first issue was getting it to run on a flash drive. I could burn it to DVD, but honestly, I'm running out of DVD's and I'm not buying more.

I need to find a better way to put Mint on a flash drive.... then I'll try it out.

Meanwhile, I'm really liking Fedora 16. Even if it is optimized for mobile.
Its not completely useless and my games are running pretty well.

Things change so take this with a grain of salt, but when you first mentioned you were on to doing installs from Thumbdrives....I got excited and went looking...

The upshot, sorry no references, it's on the Mint site somewhere....

is that you can put the installer on a thumbdrive but not Mint itself... not sure what good that would do anyone, but I read it on mint, but it might be outdated info...?

Dude, I'd be happy to burn one for you and send it along, give you a few more mins with the family...":O}

You shoul also look at Mint Debain... At boot you can switch between xfce., MATE and Cinnamon desktops. Just whenever you feel it!! ":O}

This is what I originally found: LiLi
Linux Live on a Thumb drive.
Its pretty cool. Allows you to have 3 choices with Linux distros:
1. Run Live Linux
2. Install Linux
3. virtualize Linux in Windows

I had it working with Mint, but my newest machine wouldn't boot the USB drive.
I think I have it figured out by now, but I already have Fedora 16 on that machine.
I would have to redo everything if I wanted to go back to Fedora again.

So, I'll have to plan on Mint with a different machine.

It's all good! LOL

I spent most of yesterday trying to re-enable my A: drive...Unbuntu decided I didn't have need of it and disable it at install; and mostly I Don't!

But I got it into my head that my BIOS is two years old and that might cause a few minor problems....

So I needed a floppy to boot. (besides...I have a whole box of them - haven't re-used one in years...why won't they go away!!?)

Never got her done, went to terminal with 3 different guys (articles on-line and a Mint tutorial ) who all thought I knew something!! ":O}

Then while mulling over my situation I remembered you(?) or someone recently saying they flash their BIOS ..well from flash! Sounded scary at the time...(everything sounds scary to the ignorent...never forget that and we will frighten ourselves and others far less often!":O}

But now, now that desperation has pushed my beyond my fears...
(Acute anxiety over per-mature hardware dearth in a bad economy)

I'm willing to consider some pretty scary stuff.

*Because crying in the Forums that my A: drive won't work.... let's just say that for me...it's a motivator.

In my defence, my Asus manual that came with, is like all motherboard manules...it well and truly sucks, pretty much just repeating the notes on settings in the BIOS, no explanation or giving of perspective. So why download it?

And I had a copy...Right? Wrong! The DL copy is clear is beautiful! ONE file, ONE driver file, that's all I put on my 4gig thumbdrive. at Boot I hit alt-F2 for the fastest easiest and safest BIOS update of my life...I'm One chuffed monkey as Wild-Andy useta say...":O}

I guess the only reason to need an A: drive is to put the BIOS on the floppy right?
Otherwise if you already had the BIOS files on the floppy, you don't need an A: drive, you just need to boot to it and the BIOS needs to see the drive.

I'm assuming the former is your problem.

If your motherboard supports USB flashing of the BIOS, I suggest doing that.
But I'll be honest, I've never done it before...

I have a question:
how many computer do you have and how many distros are you running?

I'll tell you one thing that really chaps my azz, and that's the fact that mobo manufacturers, even manufacturers of SERVER mobos who CLAIM to SUPPORT LINUX (yes, DELL), don't give you a way to flash the bios from with the OS. You have to boot to a floppy (or in the case of DELL, A CD!) so that you can freaking flash the BIOS.

That's all well and good if you are right in front of the machine, but I've got 150 servers scattered across the entire country, and I'm DAMNED sure not going to drive to every one of them, and since most of the datacenters have techs that are only slightly smarter than rocks, sending a CD to the site isn't a terribly encouraging option either.

"Use the DRAC" you say? "It's got this nifty little option to mount a drive across the network, and then you can flash remotely" you say?

Oh, well THAT'S just DELICIOUS! USE that DRAC option and watch what happens when your network connection stutters during the FLASH!

Instant boat anchor! Grrr......

Flash a BIOS over the network? have you really tried that?
I wouldn't trust it for a second....
Might as well flash it with your laptop over a wireless router through a VPN!

How some ever I have 5 drives. I have Mint Cin. based on Ubuntu and Mint Cin. based on Debian each on its own drive they have my two new SSD drives.

Then I have Maya on a 320 Seagate. Then I have a 500 gig Seagate I use to back up to. The last drive I save for anything suggested or that looks good... I didn't plan any of this, it's just where I ended up.":O}

My bad Boo! For me flashing with a thumb drive was big smiley face deal...I didn't realize you were speaking about across a network... Boo, I tell you true, I've never even seen a network! ":O}

I was actually responding to Gizmos's comment... you could try to flash from Pattie's computer, but I don't recommend it.
USB will work better if the motherboard permits it.

Alas nothing so exotic. MAYA is the new Standard, taking over from the Gnome 2 and Gnome 3 team (Who as I understand it abandoned development.)

So Linux folks reorganize themself and formed Maya to take over Gnome development... Mean while back on the Mint farm, the Mint folks realize how dependent they are on Gnome development and set out to do the same thing the MAYA team was trying to do...Save our desk tops!

So we have to Teams of people coming to our rescue. I know nothing of what goes on behind the interface, but the Cinnamon teams says that their approaches are quite different and they use very different code, but all the same desktops.

Cinnamon is the Creation of the Mint team.

Major difference for me is that Cinnamon on Debian doesn't install my Nivida drivers with a casual flair and Cinnamon on Ubuntu does...

P.S. Update:
I Was SOOO WRONG, Debian Does use the same app to install Nvidia, I'm likeing Debain as much as Ubuntu under Cinnnamom

duh, Maya is the name for Mint... I didn't know that...
I don't really follow these distros much, but I see conversations here and there that spark my curiosity...
Like Fedora 16.
The main reason I tried it was because of Gizmo's comments. Now I like it.
You read my comments about Mint 13... I still want to try it...

Yeah, Gizmo's gotten me into a lot of trouble too, but slightly less than he's gotten me out of ":O}

No, MAYA is the new Gnome team. Mint is a group of developers that build upon the work of others, Notably Debian and Ubuntu. Both were based (and are) upon Gnome.

Maya team now takes over for and renames the Gnome team and gnome, MAYA.

Mint Team uses MAYA (old Gnome and NEW Maya) code as their base, then tries to refine and stabilize for desktop...as best as I understand it all...

But THEN the Mint team got ambitious and started their own approach to continuing Gnome development, call Cinnamon. Maya is the work of MAYA, Mint uses that and some old Gnome as well as their own creativity to create the crown of computing...Cinnamon ":O}

I wish they chose a different name because it instantly reminds me of Autodesk Maya 3D software.
