I surely do remember this. Commands that work on every other linux computer in the world for some reason do not work on Daniel's.

Try $ ./please work
if that doesn't work try

$ ./pretty please

daniel@daniel-P5Q ~ $ uname -a
Linux daniel-P5Q 3.2.0-23-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 20:39:51 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
daniel@daniel-P5Q ~ $

This is my Mint 13 (unbuntu) Cinnamon rig... as you can see. To be honest I barely remember downloafding it, been installing and setting up a LOT of distros lately...":O} This is the name up the unZipped package: systester-1.5.0-linux-i686.tar.gz

Daniel, open synaptic and see if you have any qt packages installed, please.

If you don't have the synaptic gui then run this from a CL [I think it should work, it has been a while for me with debian]:

Code:
dpkg -l | grep -i '*qt*'

That's likely the problem, no qt installed.

What GUI package manager do you use on Mint? Is it not Synaptic?

And, just for laughs, let's see if it runs without the GUI:

Code:
./systester-cli

daniel@daniel-P5Q ~ $ ./systester-cli
bash: ./systester-cli: No such file or directory
daniel@daniel-P5Q ~ $

Mostly I just use Mint install but sometimes synaptic

OK, in whichever package manager you prefer, do a search for qt and show us what it tells you. Maybe we can figure out which package you need. It's probably named qt-core or something like that.

Did the app run from the command line? If it did, try:

Code:
./systester-cli -qcborwein 4M -threads 2 -bench
(for dual-core CPU)

Code:
./systester-cli -qcborwein 4M -threads 4 -bench
(for quad-core CPU)

That should get you heated up pretty quickly. If the above doesn't work, su to root and try it as well. [or sudo] It's bedtime here but I'll check out your response in the morning

OK, 2 things. First, when you run the command to start the app, you must be in the /systester directory [for now]. After we know that the app works, there are easier ways to start it up by copying the file elsewhere, writing a small script or 'shortcut' for it, or putting the /systester directory in the search path of the OS. But for the time being:

Code:
cd /home/daniel/systester

./systester-cli (+arguments here)
So please try the commands I gave you again, from there.

Second, does the orange dot in Synaptic mean the package is installed, or available to be installed? Can you show us all of the qt packages that are available somehow?

My Debian is rusty, but this may help, and may be easier to post from. Apt-file is a utility that should query the database of uninstalled packages to see what is available to us. Let's see if the apt-file utility is in your repo (it should be). Enter these commands one at a time:

Code:
sudo apt-get install apt-file
sudo apt-file update
This will install the apt-file utility, and make a local list of packages. Now:

Code:
apt-file list qt
(you might need sudo for this, too)

Then post the output.

Ok, Dan, you're doing it again

Everything is OK up to the point where you try to start the app. Remember not to paste the prompt itself onto the command line. Only the ./systester command after the first $.

And please try the ./systester-cli command as well. I want you to do this because I *suspect* that the cli version does not need qt (since there is no GUI), and if it works, it tells me something about which direction to go next.

Did you just install qt-core, or was it installed already?

WOW! If I install MS you will supply me with millions of applications!? Can you afford that? Cause boy I sure can't, I've got a hard ware addiction to feed! And in case you missed it Chris, I'm poor. I spend on hard ware because that is what interests me. I don't spend on OSs because they interest me to much to pay for them.... you can barely afford the ONE OS you have am I right? MS kept me pretty broke for DECADES, you know like when you was in your baby days...":O}

Chris, I already have access to millions of applications. I will, I'm confident, with the help of my friends, gather very decent bench marks together.

*But you live in a world already made for you, one in which even having a choice makes you uneasy. It's called the MS mindset. I'll just say that it will leave you poor.

Join me in the world I'm trying to re-create around us. The choices I have made recently are the pillars upon which I'll try to, with the help of our friends re-build our forums around US.

The task is indeed daunting. But we have so much more than we started with last time!

Yet I had to ask myself before I began anew was it worthwhile the first time? The Forums should ask herself Was our time together worthwhile the first time?

My answer is yes.

You and everyone who joined in to help get AOA off the ground...your worthwhile, very worthwhile.

Step out of the MS world view and help me build a better vision around us...

My thought is we can do it all again and benefit ourselves and others as we do.

There's never been a better time to join our forums.

One last thing, My Martial Arts Teacher use to say:

"Not one thing man has ever done in this world was accomplished with negative energy. Every single thing that stands accomplish today was once just someone's positive thought."

daniel@debian ~/systester $
Right. So it works from the command line. If you type ./systester help you should get a help file that gives you all of the arguments that can be used, for example, to run the app over and over again to stress your machine, or other arguments to benchmark it.

I need to get a sure answer from you as to whether or not you have qt installed on the distro that you are using. Can you find out for me using apt or Synaptic or something?

Then we can try to figure out why we can't seem to get a GUI.
