It might freeze to its death and you might need reinstalling, R U sure you want to do that?

This what I use. No Pi or SuperPi, but other apps just as effective for what you want to see.

Stresslinux

Download the appropriate .iso and make a bootable CD...then run it from there.

If you want to stress your own install, rather than booting from a CD, you can use mPrime from here:

http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft/

If you are feeling adventurous, the archive of Kanada Labs files is here, with Super_Pi. Kanada is the Japanese mathemetician who (I think still) holds the record for calculating pi, something like a trillion digits or some such. You would have to figure out how to compile the source to get a Pi executable. I've never done it, I just use the StressLinux Distro.

At some point I will turn the linux portion of my brain back on and be of some use to you. I still use linux daily, I just haven't had to work on my install for quite some time so I am able to just blindly go about my tasks without problems or thought.

I switched to Arch sometime back and I use a pretty slim system with a lot of command line tools. I find that minimal code = minimal chance for problems to creep in.

Hang in there Daniel, I'm working my way back.

Cliff you have no idea how much good you do me just by showing up!

All the fine help you've given me, is by the way, the important thing is that you showed up! ":O}

You know me, I'm just stumbling about looking for things that interest me.

I've gone a bit Mint nuts!

I now have KDE, Ubuntu and Debain mint setup on their own hard drives, it's just easier for me that way.

MAN! KDE is it's own little world isn't it! It took me 20 min. just to figure out how to cut and paste in a folder or copy. I just started on it yesterday.

Debain Mint sets up my nividia drivers just like Ubuntu Mint, not sure about KDE, it has the Nvidia settings app, but when I rebooted after installing it...

(Stupid I know, to install settings before installing drivers...)

I didn't expect KDE to take me out over it! LOL

I had a restore backup, so only a few hours were lost..

Which is not to say I don't have a few things I want to know more about...

Just when ever your feeling it Dude, take things slow and get a feel for your life again.

Men retreat from the world to heal, for healing is mostly a lonely business.

Remember, we were never supposed to leave this world as we were when we entered it. The changes come, we can't prevent nor hold them back. What we can do is remain in the middle as our fate is reveled to us over time.

Hope you don't mind my bending your ear...":O}

Dan, I may have something that would be really easy for you. It is an open-source clone of super_pi that has a pre-compiled executable. Do all of the following as a normal user, not as root.

Here is the location for the download:
System Stability Tester | Free System Administration software downloads at SourceForge.net

To use it, download the .gz file into your /home/yourusername/

After the file is in the right place, open a terminal and type this:

Code:
daniel@linux:~$ tar -xzf systester*
That will unzip the files and create a /home/yourusername/systester-1.5.0-linux-i686 directory. Now, since that is a *really* long directory name, just rename the directory:

Code:
daniel@linux:~$ mv systester-1.5.0-linux-i686 systester
Then cd to that directory:

Code:
daniel@linux:~$ cd systester
Then start the app; it has an easy gui for you after that:

Code:
daniel@linux:~/systester$ ./systester
You will see the gui start up. If it starts, you can remove the .gz file from your home directory:

Code:
daniel@linux:~$ rm systester*gz
Now, when you are in the gui, you'll see it looks quite the same as the app you remember. Just enter how many digits you want to calculate to at the top dropdown, press the 'Run' button, and you're off. If you want to heat up the CPU use one of the longer tests like 64 or 128M digits, with 4 threads if you have a quad. For benchmarking the standard we all use is 1M digits, 1 thread. You can also increase the number of turns (so the test runs in a loop, over and over) to whatever you want as well.

I attached a screenshot of the app running on my machine. It just ran 4M digits with 4 threads, 1 turn. Single-threaded, it does the same test in 1 min, 5 secs.

Dan, the program executable resides in the ~/systester directory [~/systester is the same as /home/yourusername/systester]. When you are in the right place, the prompt will look like this:

Code:
daniel@daniel-P5Q ~/systester $
When the prompt looks like that, just type './systester' [no quotes]

This will start the app.

It looks like you are typing all of this at the prompt:

'/systester$ ./systester' [don't do that. The $ is part of the prompt itself, anything you type will be after it. The location immediately prior to the $ is your current directory. Type only the command that I gave you after the $]

Now, when you want to remove the .gz file, the prompt has to look like this:

Code:
daniel@daniel-P5Q ~ $
When the prompt looks like that, you are in your /home/yourusername/ directory. Then you can rm the .gz file with the line I gave you.

All of the files are in the right place. Go to that directory and run:

chmod +x systester

and tell me if there is any output

Are you saying that after the following two commands, it drops you out of the systester directory and into the /home/daniel directory?

Code:
cd /home/daniel/systester

./systester

As soon as I pasted the courser dropped down a row and took my pasted command with it...the cursor just hung there at the end of systester...blinking

I'd never seen that one before...

Dan, is this on your Fedora or Mint setup?

Please run:

Code:
uname -a
and post the output here.

When you go to the download link I gave you, what is the name of the file that you download?

There isn't any reason that I can see why it should not start with the command you just entered from the /home/daniel/systester directory, if it is the right version; however, you could be missing a library dependency or something. Let's check the version first, but I'm guessing you have a missing qt library that systester depends on. If you have the correct version of the app, then we will have to try query your package manager to see if you have all the dependencies.
