I don't have that button. You must have a new version of PlayOnLinux.
I wonder if I can upgrade PlayOnLinux without it messing up my Virtual Drives?

I wish I could remember! I've tried so many things so many times! But I "Think" you can. The new version doesn't have a default that you can put anything into.

So you would have to modify your approach. I just hit "new" loaded it up and started work today on Cry 2. Have NO IDEA as to outcome! ":O}

Looks like you get the basic idea of PlayOnLinux.
When I first used it I had no idea what I was doing. Now its a breeze!
I'm starting to understand a lot of the options too

For sure, I'd hold back on Cry 2, still unknown what I can get from it... But Half-life games and Riddick are perfect. Modern warfare is playable and improving, down to minor artifacts and still has trouble dealing with smoke and snow storms, otherwise very payable!

Just checked - this is a package from Ubuntu, and appears to be version 4.0.14-1, which looks to have been a release on 19 Nov 2011. The current release version of PoL is 4.1.8.

What version do you have?

Good question... how do I find out?
I know!!! Why would I ask that if I'm doing PlayOnLinux tutorials?
I've never checked my current version.

You should be able to do "dpkg -s playonlinux" in a terminal.

POL installs

After the current install there are two to choose from 4.1.7 and 4.1.8. I believe that 4.1.7 still has the default drive that you can configure. 4.1.8 does not.

You must create it. I've had my best luck with 4.1.8, but 4.1.7 CAN install a few things easily that 4.1.8 seems to need babying even when it works. Constant Wine crash notices that you are then told to ignore IF the app is still installing...doesn't build confidence.As Boo has noted in the past.

About the only way you know for sure if a Dotnet has installed is if the next in line doesn't have to reinstall it to in stall...

I think you will have added possibilities if you cut loose and give the next two POLs a try. Same with Wine

I'll see what version I'm using.
Building a default Virtual Drive is fine with me. I may not even use it because Wine its-self IS my default.
Winetricks installs all the DLL's & Components I need for Wine.
So I only use PlayOnLinux to setup Prefixes (Virtual Drives) of Wine to install a game or Steam.

I still don't know why Winetricks didn't work for your Mint 13 32-bit.

By the way, I am in the middle of a Battlefield 2 tutorial... Next is STALKER

I just DL the newest POL, it installs Wine 1.4. looking at the wine page, i decide to stay with 1.4, until I have to move for one reason or another.

I shall begin with wine tricks, nobody insults me quite like tricks! LOL

I did a BUNCH of tests with Battlefield 2 this morning.
Its was very finicky with the vanilla installation but once I patched to 1.51 I could run it perfectly at any resolution and all the settings on high.
So strange how some games work great and some don't.
I have a feeling its related to the direct x versions.
Most newer games use Direct X 10

It seems like Direct x 9 games run fine on Linux.

Yeah, Direct X10 isn't there yet - the trunk revision of Wine is still implementing parts of Direct X 10, so expect output to be a bit odd.

Quick question - why do you need to install DirectX anything, as Wine should be providing those libraries?

I'll get to your Question Aedan... sort of...":O}

I had to do a complete 64 bit install from scratch, thank you Acronis!!

I'm trying this: Two of my games are listed in POL games. So instead of installing steam and letting Steam load everything, I created or POL created each it's own virtual drive, adds "A" version of wine, differs with steam, cry-2 and Borderlands, each gets it's own wine version .

Then POL adds in Dx runtime, one, the one the game needs, Dotnet and some windows stuff.

Each install done this way is a bit different. Which is why I'm thinking that putting all your games in one default V-Drive, might not be a good idea Boo...??

As you add games you acquire a number of Wine versions. You can then choose from, but wait it gets much much better! See below!":O}

When you can install in this way , You need POL to have it and to have access to steam or the game Disks or to have the game file on your drive. During the process of creating a V-Drive you get a choice of 32 bit or 64 bit format. This Is in POL 4.1.8 BTW!

I choose 64 bit, probably will regret it...LOL

Still pulling things together from a new install...haven't actually tried it to see how things went!":O}

Did you install from Disk? I'm seeing improvements in B-2, but far from perfect. I'll try 1.51..if I can ...":O}

This is a first. I finished dl-ing last night. This morning when I hit the Borderlands icon, it started downloading again! I go on steam, to Downloads to see what's going on. There's no meter running, instead it just says "UPDATING" No progress graph.

I try Cry -2, same same. Updating. But this time there a progress bar as well as the Updating notice.So at lest I have two games where I can work with them.

I just checked back with my "Updates" It's installing the entire game...again, this time to steammapps. So who knows what I actually get when I next click on the game, My V-drive version or bog standard Steam game?

Apparently all the Direct X and Dot NET Framework are not installed by default. So I've had to go through Winetricks for these Packages and then my games work.

Also, sometimes the Direct X that installs with the game just doesn't work, but the version supplied by Winetricks does.... who knows, its all trial and error for me.

The reason I install all of my games in the same Steam Virtual Drive is because that is how it works in Windows. Steam is meant to launch all of these different games.
I don't run them in the default Wine because if I mess it all up I can just start over without messing up Wine settings & packages.

Having a separate Steam Virtual Drive for each game is a lot more work and actually takes up a lot more hard drive space.

But for now, its probably a good idea since you are having problems with different Steam games.

Almost all the Steam games I have run on Direct X 9 anyways, so as long as I have the correct DLL's and Components installed in that Steam Virtual drive, all my game will launch from one Steam install.
So far it works fine for me... but I'm not playing Crysis 2 either.
