Interesting - of the limited playing around I've done so far, I've not ended up installing DirectX or .NET stuff at all. Ok, all I've done is run EQ2 and PerformanceTest, but it makes me wonder how much Direct X stuff is needed?

.NET is needed for apps that use it as it's not installed by default.

So strange how some games work great and some don't.
I have a feeling its related to the direct x versions.
Most newer games use Direct X 10

It seems like Direct x 9 games run fine on Linux.
I'm assuming you mean you installed wine 1.51? If your putting all your games in one V-Drive, how can you do that? In 4.1.8 you create a v-drive, then select the wine version, which can be change later to any version that might work.

This has inherit problems, I'm just beginning to understand. Some wine version can not install 1.1 dotnet, some can't install 3.5, a few can do them all.

But the only way I know to give a game 1.51 is to dl it into it's own singular V-Drive... then each time I change wine versions, I have to re-install dotnet dx etc.

time consuming no? ":O}

OR!! do you mean something else when you say "Patched" ? ":O}

Its one of two things:
  1. Borderlands needs to be updated
  2. Steam needs to be updated
Unfortunately both are automatic. So you can't "force" an update.
I'm glad to see someone feel my Steam woes after so many years banging my head
You have added a whole new element with Linux and Wine but I think it will eventually run.
Try closing Steam and logging in a few time to see if it wants to update.

Actually I can only use Wine 1.4.1 in PlayOnLinux to run Steam. My current version won't show the Tahoma fonts... kinda lame, but maybe they have fixed it with the newer version.
All I have ever done with steam is install it once and install each game in that Steam. That is what I have been doing in Mint 13 also. Everything seems to be running fine.
Your Virtual Drive is mimicking Windows and its meant to have all of those different Packages installed. So installing different packages and games in one Virtual drive should be fine. When I finally get a SSD hard drive, I'm going to install Mint 13 again and try to install all of my game in one PlayOnLinux Virtual Drive.

So everything your doing is just a straight shot Steam games accessed normally in steam. Other than wine and POL of course. all the add ins, Dotnet etc all just go into you steam V-drive and you don't create sepeate v-drives, even for non steam games?

Please show me a pic of your POL V-drives, I'll show you mine!":O} These three games are all I have that I know how to install this way. You may be able to do it by access steammapps and get it to go separate that way.

From what I understand, your saying that with my winetricks setup I've done all I can do and that adding files to a seperate V-drive is just wasting my time?

As you can see from my questions I'm having a hard time understand exactly how these three work together....POL, Wine and Tricks.

I've thought about it and the way you are separating Steam into multiple Virtual Drives is probably a GOOD idea.
Lets say you got Crysis 2 running great in Steam with a specific version of Wine and certain packages installed. If you go ahead and install another game in the same Steam Virtual Drive that requires a different version of Wine and totally different pacakges... it could break your Crysis 2 installation.
So in that case, it makes a LOT of sense to sepearate Virtual Drives even if it means separate Steam installations.
That is not how Steam is meant to work, but in the case of Linux it may be better.
I have a feeling its related to older games (Direct x 9) vs newer games (Direct x 10 & 11) that is causing these strange problems.

I just installed Fallout 3 today and did some testing. It installs fine, patches fine and uses something called "Games for Windows LIVE" which requires an older version of Wine. I got it to launch and set everything to high, but after the movies when it actually enters the game, it slows down dramatically during text prompts.
So once again, different version of Wine but uses Direct x 9 and Visual C 2005 packages. Still not running great, but i'll keep troubleshooting
