I am happy to announce that we will be providing a copy of CrossOver for free to all comers this Halloween, Wednesday, October 31, from 00:00 until 23:59 pm, Central Daylight Time. That's the treat - we hope you enjoy it, and we hope you spread the word to all your friends so they, too, can enjoy CrossOver goodness. I registered and installed CrossOver.
Honestly I was hoping to get Assassin's Creed running since I couldn't do it with PlayOnLinux.
So Far I am NOT impressed!
When you look up Assassins' Creed on their website, it shows the EXACT same problems I was having and the EXACT same fixes I was trying.
Looks like CrossOver uses Wine too, but you pay money for it.
I may have to try some other games to fully experience it, but I think the really benefit to paying is they will support and troubleshoot your games.
But for me... PlayOnLinux is the way to go!

Well, CodeWeavers have put a fair bit of work into Wine, so it's not that surprising really! What CrossOver does have is a number of hacks to support specific programs. Whereas the Wine project does not want to have any "hacks" to support specific programs, instead preferring to get the APIs working right. Generally it means that some code (traditionally business stuff) will run much better on CrossOver than in Wine.

Hmm, interesting... I will do some more research. Now that I have an account I may try some more failed-to-work games like Crysis.

Now when you say "hacks" you are referring to NOCD & disabling DRM type of "hacks"?

No, I mean the kind of workarounds to get an application up and working when it wouldn't ordinarily work.

I'll have to check it out because when I looked up the fixes for Assassin's Creed, they were identical to WineHQ fixes.

I think POL and Winetricks do themselves a dis service with their list of games. most don't play! Simple fact. They don't.

A few play and that's it, they just do. A few can be taught to play. Most play some what, but some what is the same as not playing.

But then we do ask an awful lot of our emulators don't we! ":O}

I was wondering last night how well Windows could emulate Linux...should it ever see the need to? Or it this something else everyone knows but me? ":O}

I dl'ed Crossover in 32 and 64 bit. I've install to each...I can't find the crossover app anywhere in my systems! help me please! ":O}

I agree that most game don't play out-of-the box with PlayOnLinux. Hence all of my tutorials. There is always something else to tweak when getting a game to work properly.
But, Most of MY games have been working GREAT!
There are a LOT of GOG games in the Install list for PlayOnLinux and I havn't tried them.
There are way too many games for me to try them all, but they wouldn't be on the list if it didn't work at all for anyone.

I don't think you would want to Emulate Linux in Winblows because you can use Live Disc or dual-boot. You can use VMware to launch LInux distros but you need to have some mulit-core CPU's and a LOT of memory. I tried it on my work computer and Linux was way too slow.

It appeared in my Menu towards the top!
Didn't happen automatically but eventually was there.

All I had to do was double-click and click install

So, why don't we fix the scripts so that you don't need to tweak anything?
