Mint 14 64 bit Gold,we are lagerly past the tarnish!

After many struggles in Mint 14- 64bit RC I finally got it to load properly and to run quite well.

I just had three problems really, but they really were problems.

The First was that as install completed it would inform me that it could not install grub. (Linux Boot Manager) As the installer so thoughtfully points out..."This is a fatal error."

It would offer possible choices for grub to install to, but none of them would satisfy it. So after a bit of sulking, I disconnected every other drive on my system... Mint-14 just wanted to be an only child and so installed grub fine.

I was going to try and see if it Gold could load grub in the presence of others, but forgot and left them temporarily disconnected, so this may or may not remain a problem in Gold.

The second problem I just had to just stumble though on my own.

Immediately after install and re-boot I would come to a login screen. I shouldn't have as I told Mint to auto log me in. But there it was. So I login the screen goes blank and the Mint chimes sound lovely to hear at last...and I'm back at the login screen.

We play together like this wiling away the hours until it comes to me, there must be more to Mint 14 than a login screen!!

This is a new hyper performance login screen...it's got "Features"!

One of them is a choice of interfaces, a good half dozen choices. So I try Cinnamon 2d and 3d, Maya, and one more Debain, all fail to provide the promised OS. Just a return to the login screen.

I Move to 32 bit Mint 14 which seems less afflicted by install issues in that in didn't have any, easy install.

But to pile up FAH points I need 64 bit commuting! So as soon as 32 bit is up I get back to that login screen. I try Gnome and get my boot to Mint 14. Now I'm pretty sure what's up, even if I can't believe it...

I immediately do a system update, then go to the Additional drivers section of the update app. I look and see that I'm currently using Linux drivers. I install the Nvidia 310 option and re- boot. Cinnamon at last!

Evidently Cinnamon cannot boot with Linux drivers any more. It now requires that Nvidia drivers be installed in order to run at all.

So if you want to install Mint 14 64 bit I would not hesitate. Some very nice refinements and after a few days messing her about she seems quite stable. Just remember to install Gnome first and to update to your cards drivers.

The Third was that RC shipped without any 32 bit Libs. Among other things I remain blissfully unaware of, one needs those 32 bit libs to install Wine. and without wine Linux gaming is pretty much reduced to pong.

A few games will of course run natively, but as far as windows games go, you hit a brick wall.

Aedan was able to diagnose why wine couldn't load and help me past it.
Happily this is not a mistake that Mint needed to repeat and Gold comes ready to install wine for you and me.

I like Mint 14. But I am concerned. This release was a bit of a negative first for Mint. This first time I could not just install it. The first time I need to seek out remedies just to install her.

However as my troubles centered around the release candidate and except for the login loop were fixed in Gold release, I can't complain to much.

What bothers me is how easily they might have avoided days of frustration for me. A hyper new login screen, but they can't have it tell me that Cinnamon won't boot without Nvidia drivers?

"Just boot Gnome first!"

Did they not tell me because they are embarrassed to need Nvidia "Proprietary" drivers?

So Mint..."Why was I not informed?"

So Mint, thank you very much for yet another excellent FREE OS.

I'm fairly sure my complaints are at an end as I feel my appreciation growing":O}

I noticed the login screen too. It won't log me in until I select a type of desktop

In 64 bit it wont log you in if the selection needs Nvidia drivers! It tries, poor thing! That's why Gnome still boots, she can run on Linux drivers, but you should see what you lose! Oh! You can see what you lose! Take a peek the next time you boot up! ":O}

Oh yes, I am familiar with this.
How the heck are we supposed to install Nvidia drivers if we can't even log in to the desktop?

What is "supposed" to happen is, if you don't have proprietary drivers installed, the desktop will use a non-proprietary version like Neauvea.

Why didn't it do that? Who knows....
If I install Mint 14 from USB will I have this problem too?

As far as I can tell, yes. The problem isn't that Mint 64 bit needs drivers. The problem is that Mint didn't tell me that it needed drivers and that I should boot to Gnome.

Had they done that simple thing at the login screen, this would be a typical seamless install. They just didn't tell me what they were doing.

It won't be a problem Boo. The login comes with Mint. once you installed just boot to login screen and select Gnome, for one time only, then update and you can log out and log back in as Cinnamon and your good to go.

They just needed to tell us!

You install them from a normal console of course. Mind you, the nouveau don't drive all nVidia cards yet, so they'll fail on some cards.
You should be able to find the details of what happened in /var/log/Xorg.0.log - this is really useful for troubleshooting.

Half the time I don't bother logging in graphically - saves a lot in boot time!

I always set auto login, seems safe enough out here in the woods..

(I realize that just because you don't use a graphical login, it doesn't mean you don't login...these things just come to me out of the blue! ":O}

But because Cinnamon is default for this Mint download and it couldn't boot cinnamon without Nvidia, i gave me the login screen anyway. Sensible solution really. Let's me login to Gnome, update and grab my drives and log out and back into Cinn... If they had only shared the plan!

That is probably because you aren't playing games in Linux.

Daniel, I totally know what you are talking about... I've always had to do this when installing Linux the first time. Even in Fedora. Once the proprietary drivers are installed then the pretty GUI launches.

Only diff is that previously Cinnamon could always at lest boot to Linux drivers...

But something Aedan said finally sunk in...This may just be my card or my card's series that has the login problem...I always think I'm the center of world!

My Card maybe the ONLY card that has a login problem!! My card may be the center of the world!

(Wait! Didn't I just go thought that!? ":O}

Uh yeah, if your video card is the center of the world, then you are the center of the Linux world.

I wouldn't say "insight" but I would say foolish stubbornness and patience with tinkering
