DX10 on WINE starting

Read this at Phoronix, [Phoronix] WINE Developers Start On Direct3D 10 Support

Seams that at some point soon, Linux will be able to play DirectX 10 games, while Windows XP will not.

Running World Of Warcraft using WINE now (no longer using Cedega) and its incredibly stable and fast. These guys have really done a nice job.

ThunderRd 25th October, 2008 08:08 AM

Did you ever give the folding client a go in WINE? [off-topic but curious]

dsio 25th October, 2008 10:33 AM

Didn't get around to trying it before I killed my desktop :P

Aedan 25th October, 2008 11:26 AM

How long before someone ports WINE to windows? ;)

I'll still need someone to take me by the hand and show me how to use it....Hey I bet a lot of people would like that! (Just remember I was here first! ":O}

dsio 25th October, 2008 06:48 PM

Do a

yum install wine*

the * is a wildcard to get all the extra packages.

After you've done that, Wine is installed and yea, then you pretty much just install programs and games like you would on windows.

Daniel ~ 25th October, 2008 06:52 PM

Wine is transparent? I t just steps in when I start to install say Farcry and makes the magic work?

I removed Cedega by searching Installed apps in Add and Remove programs.

i said it was the "official" front end of Cedega so I'm unsure if I got it all or if it took installed games with it?

dsio 25th October, 2008 08:45 PM

Its come a very long way recently. Also, don't /run/ wine as root, run it as your normal user.

The number of things that just work is surprising really.

And yea, given a bit of development time you should be able to play your DirectX 10 games like Crysis in full DX10 mode under wine on linux while Microsoft forces its users to switch to vista for that priviliage.

I'm actually curious as to how 3dmark runs under wine.

dsio 25th October, 2008 08:56 PM

Just as a tip, if ever possible use OpenGL rendering mode in games you run on WINE. If you use an OpenGL rendering path, that's natively supported by linux and you don't run into some of the issues you will under Direct3D. This doesn't mean you can't use D3D, just that if you get the choice, OpenGL will usually perform a bit better.

dsio 25th October, 2008 08:57 PM

Well, 3dmark05 installed correctly and seams to work, I'll run it and see how it scores.

dsio 25th October, 2008 09:09 PM

Well... 3dmark05 doesn't run, 3dmark2001SE does, 11584 3dmarks in that in the laptop.

Not sure if I have a copy of 03 still.

dsio 25th October, 2008 09:20 PM

Incidentally, Wine AppDB - Browse Applications is fairly good for supported programs.

Far Cry it says is well supported, CS: Source not so much but should work mostly. World Of Warcraft is perfect and fast. Far Cry 2 works so they say.

Daniel ~ 25th October, 2008 09:38 PM

Installed and ran Half-life episode 2 under steam, under wine, in fedora! Actually runs GREAT! LOL

Going to nose about the data base...see if any one has run Everest home Edition...utilities in fedora! ":O}
