Exclamation Linksys Router, wana ssh in my home network, how do I

Ok heres the deal:

I have a Linksys router ==> BEFSR41W

2 pcs connected to the router.

If I wana ssh into one of the pcs, how do I do it???

everytime i try it, it seems that the pc i wana ssh into cant be seen from the outside.

Under the setup of the router ive tried:

1. port forwarding (doesnt seem to work)

2. and setting one pc under the DMZ (doesnt seem to work too)

3. disabling DHCP

Any suggestions most welcomed.

Firstly, disable DHCP on the machine that is going to be the server - it needs to have a static IP address.

Secondly, you will need port forwarding for SSH. SSH runs on TCP port 22, so you don't need to tick UDP.

Lastly, you need to know the outside address of your linksys NAT device in order to connect to the SSH server.

All this /SHOULD/ work. I've not had a problem with the BEFSR41. You can test this by typing "telnet <outside address> 22" from a command line. You should get a reply like "SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_3.4p1" come back. You can even test this from INSIDE the network, on the other PC, as the BEFSR41 is inteligent enough to loopback connections. (Shame it took Cisco so long)

Hey AidanII

Ive tried what you told me to do.....

When I type: telnet <ip address of the PC i wana telnet into>

I get the message "an existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host"

The pc im using to telnet is a pc INSIDE my home network. BTW the pc that im targeting using telnet is running RedHat 8.0

Anything else I should check???

THanks

I think telnet is disabled on RH 8.0 by default. But you don't want to telnet, you want to ssh, which is a different protocol on a different port.

On the RH 8.0 box, try "ssh localhost" from a terminal window. If you don't get connected, then sshd is not running. You can turn it on with "chkconfig sshd on;/etc/init.d/sshd start".

You will need an ssh client on the other pc to talk to sshd on your Linux box though.
