Nice review, Danrok!

Not a bad price for what it does, or so it seems to me. If I had a PSP, I might just buy one of those chargers. Could be awfully handy.

You can get solar chargers for other gadgets as well.

What I think would be handy is a 12v solar charger with a cigar-lighter socket. Because you can already get car chargers/adaptors it would be a pretty much universal power source for running small devices.

Do you reckon that is feasable or would it be too hefty?

The problem I see with that, Danrok, is that the amount of power you can get from current solar cells is pretty small. Solar cells are horribly inefficient. Last I checked, the really good and expensive ones ran about 10% efficiency. It's actually more efficient to use solar radiation to heat water and use that to generate power than it is to use solar cells, as I understand it. However, there is a lot of research being done to find more efficient materials.

I found these:
http://www.voltaicsystems.com/

They will charge a mobile phone in 4 to 6 hours in ideal conditions, i.e. pointing directly at the sun. Of course, if you are heading south and wearing the back-pack it will take a long time to charge up a phone.

Still, very useful for special uses like recharging a handheld GPS device in the middle of nowhere.

My Citizen Titanium watch runs off of a solar battery.

That's my only experience with solar besides calculators, however.

Damn grade school math class and trying to play etch a scetch to catch the light from those dirty fold down windows...

19% efficiency now. Still stupidly expensive for any significant amount of power though. A decent solar cell that can provide the same amount of power as the Sony PSP charger can looks to be around the £100 mark...
