Wonder what that will do for O2's Cocoon phone, given that still appears to be O2's answer to the iPhone...

Is it "free" on contract, or £300?

Well, I imagine you'll end up paying an upgrade charge for the handset initially. Something like £40 or so.

Then you pay your normal contract tarrif monthly.

Oooh.... those of you with little experience with Apple products are in for a big surprise when the pricing comes out. Apple NEVER discounts their products in any way, shape or form. If you can find an iPod for $10 off, that's a great deal. Apple computers with a $50 discount is also fantastic.

Part of Apple's deal with AT&T was that the phone company was not allowed to offer any kind of rebate at all, leaving the consumer to pay for the entire retail price of the phone. This practice is just as unheard of in the US as it is in Europe. AT&T decided to counteract this by offering pricing plans that are discounted a decent bit from the norm.

I wouldn't expect any discounts on the iPhone when it finally hits Europe.

I've spotted one UK site selling the 4GB for £499 and the 8GB for £599. I guess they would be grey imports from the USA, and no contract.

My guess would be that Jobs has correctly surmised that Apple people WANT to pay more, it goes well with with ridicule and heightens their sense of individuality and uniqueness... I thought I was kidding, but now I'm not so sure...":O}

Speculation as to what caused the policy of no price cuts have varied, but there is one that sounds better than the rest. See, Apple is selling this phone in their own retail outlets as well as AT&T stores. Apple wouldn't very well be able to sell many units at their stores charging retail price if AT&T stores were charging only $200, would they?

Whatever. Apple does its own thing pretty much all the time. It works well for them.
