Display driver stopped responding and has recovered

System: Nforce2, AMD Barton 2800 athlon that has been Downclocked to run cooler, the case temp is kept around 29-35C, and i had no problems when i used to do this on windows xp.

Heres a picture of the problem i keep receiving.. which is limiting me to me folding... and i was able to fold for a month or so on windows XP with no problems with SUPER high temps too and now iam getting really low temps and all this problem has arrived with me using Windows 7.

I am almost 100% positive it is driver related because I have no problems with the PC when i uninstall the drivers and run it off of the no drivers, but then i kinda want to have the drivers so i can run Aero windows theme, stream HD movies smoothly, and of course GPU folding.

and heres a pic of my drivers thru GPU, Speed fan and CPUZ:

  • heres what i tried and did not work:
  • Uninstall thru install file and then reinstall
  • Uninstall thru windows program uninstaller and reinstall
  • Done both of those above in combination with Drivesweeper and reinstalled
  • Driversweeper alone and reinstall
  • Uninstalled both Microsoft Visual C+++
  • Driver Sweeper thru safe mode
  • Used a driver that came with videocard (9.8 Catalyst)
  • Used a driver older then the one with videocard (9.6)
  • Overclocked CPU and downclocked it.. same results..
  • Increase volts to AGP and increase volts to PSU with same results
  • Took off case panels for more cooling (same results.. maybe worst)
  • Uninstalled drivers (stopped the hang up and freezing symptoms but cannot fold or stream HD movies smoothly anymore)

so far my conclusions is that windows 7 is more sensitive to heat then windows xp and ubuntu.. but that doesn't make any sense to me... because if windows xp can do it.. why not windows 7?

ok an update.. even the new 10.50 hotfix update still has the problem... i used drivesweeper and going to wait for the next cat update, and give it another try later...

sucks..

welp using 10.60 update now the newest one.. its like every single new version that comes out i get the same results.. i did the typical driver sweaper and such.. but now iam turning off UAC and seeing if that works... i'll report back... i really hope i can get this PC back to normal usage again.. but with out a halfway decent graphics card this PC is kinda useless to me

not to be out done, I'm having freezes and reboots in 32bit XP. killing my folding numbers.
going to try updating the cuda drivers. yea, it's an nVidia card but seems to be having similar issues to your ATI card.
let us know how it works out for you. I'll come back later.
