Taking the leap, or...making a stumblem...

I'm going to be receiving 9.2 SUSE on DVD. The problem is I don't actually have a DVD on my computer. So I've decided to get one. I really can't afford to make a mistake in my purchase.

I don't know a thing about them! I want Re-Write capabilities if that's at all affordable. It's has to be affordable!!

It will be going my 8RDA+ Barton-M 2500 Box. I'll be using Retail Roxio 6.2 software which I already own.... Or maybe I won't in Linux! God this is scary! LOL

I really can't afford to buy anything else at ALL in order to make it work. I only want it at this point as a web browser and e-mail box, and As a folder.

I'm on a omni Cube switch box and a Netgear router, with a Comcast cable connect through the router.

Have I got a prayer in hell of pulling this off? LOL

Or should I wait until I can spend to find gear Linux likes?

Hey! Noboby likes to fail! ":O}

I have two DVD drives, but one of them doesn't read DVD-ROMs! I thought that it was faulty until I went to the manufacturers web site and it said that some revisions of this drive do not read DVD-ROMs.

Well, I guess I'm committed to buying one, so it a matter of paying as little as possible for one that will perform dependable. This time around speed is not hugely important, compatibility is more my concern. So I guess I'm looking for a quality drive with no frills at a good price.

Also I want to avoid any pit falls that may exist outside my awareness... Now there's a thought! LOL

Looks very good Robbie, but can any say for sure it will be recognized and work well under Linux?

Sorry I can't and it PROBABLY WON'T, as it's an 8x!!! But it may. Some research might be in order to make sure that it will. Oh Kaitain?

I would recommend the NEC ND-2500A. I did a quick web search and all of the sources I found said that it works with SUSE. Note the free shipping and the free 5-pack of disks. I've sold a lot of these to my customers and have used one myself a lot.

It's an ATAPI DVD rewriter, so you can guarantee that it'll read DVDs in Linux, and with the correct software, will write them too. I have no idea whether it'll let you choose the + or - standard though, since I've never actually touched DVD burning in Linux.

Personally I use the cheapest, lightest, easiest DVD drive I can (LiteON LTD165) which is a 16x reader.

n/b the speed at which the drive writes makes no difference with regards to its compatability.

Would some one explain the + and - thing for me?

Those are the "format's" that they come in. I believe that the one's that are comming out now will read both. I believe the - one's were a little more cheaper.
but I could be wrong.
