linux help required hi all, i've just finished installing ubuntu linux 6.06 and now i have a problem. i want to be able to mount the windows XP partitions i have so that i can play my music and view my files in ubuntu. When i try to mount them, a warning appears telling me that they aren't removable and that it could not execute pmount. Can anyone help me work out how to mount the drives so that i can access them through linux (if i can do that, i plan to use linux for the majority of things). Thanks, Scott.

ok, figured out how to mount the drives, but now i've done that, whenever i go to access the mount point, i get an error saying that i don't have permission to view the files. I tried to change the permissions so that i could view the files, but i got another error saying that i didn't have permission to change the permissions. i tried logging in as root from the login screen only to find that i'm not allowed to do that either! Anyone help?

When you installed Linux, it should have asked you for a password for the root user, and then allowed you to set up additional users IIRC. |

it only asked me to set a password for the user i wanted to create. i managed to change it by using "sudo passwrd root" and then typing the password i wanted. But i can't seem to login as root from the GUI login screen.

aha! got it sorted out! EDIT: realised that you can do an 'install from net' type of thing so i installed xmms and now i'm happy.

So you know, you should reallly change your /etc/fstab to mount whichever windows partitions you want on boot, or by mount -a. When its mounted at boot, the permission issue isn't there. Don't log into any GUI with root. Its a bad idea. Linux won't protect you from screwing the pooch like windows does, and if you rm random stuff (ask Gizmo) it stays rmed.
