Microsoft makes Linux pact with Novell

"In an unusual partnership, old foes Microsoft and Novell have joined forces to work on harmonizing their products.

The companies said Thursday they will collaborate on development of specific technologies, for example to help Microsoft's Windows, a proprietary operating system, work with Novell's Suse Linux, which is based on open-source code. On the business side, they will promote each other's products."

I have to say, this is a good thing.
I think it does show that Microsoft aren't just out to kill everything else off. Getting Windows and Linux to work better together could be a very important step.

Many of you probably don't remember this, but I remember a time when Novell was the king of the networking world. If you had a network, it was Novell. MS and Novell even worked together for a while.

Then Microsoft decided that Novell had too much of the networking market. Microsoft started pressuring companies to not write Novell drivers. Microsoft started including networking functionality in Windows (Windows for Workgroups 3.11). Novell got stupid, too.

Novell nearly went bankrupt.

Anyone who believes that Microsoft has turned over a new leaf and wants to play nice with the rest of the computing world has got rocks in their head, IMO. This might be a win-win right now, but Novell is playing with a snake. They'd best remember that when you've got a snake by the tail, you're awfully close to the fangs.

I'm glad that they're such good pals. Novell has messed up SuSE Linux, IMO. It no longer plays nice with a pre-existing Windows installation. Not good.

The last company I worked for in MN still ran Novell. Not a big fan but it was super stable. Did have a few issues with some other software, but always found a work around.

When I first read this I just shook my head thinking WHAT....There is an underlying motive somewhere.
