Performance-wise I didn't see any improvement, but I didn't see any downgrade in performance either.

I have been using Vista Ultimate 64bit as a daily OS for a couple of weeks now, I have tried to leave it as close to possible to a standard install without turning off much. Other than some driver quality issues I really cannot find much to complain about, but I haven't found anything to get excited about either. I am going to be setting up an E2140 based rig with 1 gig of memory and a single hard drive to get an idea of how it run on the average machine, but I really expect my opinion of it to change at that point.

I lack DX10 games since I have moved most of my gaming to the PS3, but I have Bioshock and Crysis. I didn't notice any difference in Bioshock with DX10 and my 320MB 8800GTS has a hard time keeping up with Crysis which makes it a little rough to evaluate that portion.

From a daily Linux users impression of Vista, it's not that bad of an OS, XP is still better but it has more time on the block.

Thanks Cliff.

So your saying with a little more time it may be as good as it use to be when it was XP? (Just kidding, not trying to put words in your mouth.":O}

Here my take on Vista SP1.

After 2 weeks of testing & tweaking it's not very good for gaming performance at all, although DX10 does look cool.
(There's subtle differences that are seen and heard in Bioshock)
Even Tweaked with all the unneeded services either set to Manual or Disabled XP is still 2 times faster!
And the gaming performance diff between XP and Vista is 10-20FPS.
But even still, at 40FPS it looks laggy on the framerates with Vista but at the same framerates on XP it doesn't look laggy at all...

So if you want to run Vista, you better have a very fast and powerful CPU & Graphics card to overcome this until Vista puts out a SP that really does make a diff in performance.

My system doesn't perform all that great with Vista for gaming. Not even overclocked.
But for everyday use with software it works just fine.

I read that 4 Gb of RAM helps Vista. That means the 64-bit flavor, of course. Hmm, too bad 8 Gb of memory is so costly.
