A problem in Fedora 8 Boot

This has persisted several weeks as I wait for Fedora to fix herself by way of up date...she hasn't...

First off is there an easy way to access my boot log to post here? If not I can hand copy the problem here...

As all is well once I reach desk top or once I reach the Fedora 8 blue start up OKing
each device as it loads for tha matter, I'll wait for the easy path to show off the errno=-5 of my ways...":O}

Isn't there a "safe mode" you can boot into?
Haven't you tried that?

If you're talking about the checklist Fedora runs through where it says like

Item [ OK ]

If one of them is hanging, or if one of them is showing as [ Failed ]

Then post that line, and preferably the 3 lines above it.

Yeah, you're being a wee bit vague. There are a great many problems that can occur at boot. It could be an fstab error, a broken daemon, a failed autodetect, and a whole host of others.

With a little more info I can try to help, as well.

EDIT: Clearly you posted before my page refreshed. I don't think that /var/log/messages should be only readable by root. Here are the commands (just copy/paste into terminal):

cat /var/log/messages > ~/booterror.txt

If it says "permission denied" then type

sudo cat /var/log/messages > ~/booterror.txt

Both of these commands will make a file called booterror.txt in your home directory, and you can post it here.

ata8.00: cmd c4/00:8:00:00:00/00:00/eotag o pio 4096 in SRST FAILED
ata8:00 status: {DRDY}
ata 8.00: Revalidation failed (errno=-5) (Often Repeats 5-10 times then

ata 8:00 SRST faled (errno=-16) (Often Repeats 5-10 times then

Buffer errno on Device sdd logical device O

ata 6 reset failed giving up

After all this and around a three minute delay while it occurs it boots perfectly normaly execpt that there is on "Warning"

su to root, Redroar uses Ubuntu, which makes use of sudo, fedora doens't so you just su to root, then perform the command normally. eg.

su to root
cat /var/log/messages > ~/booterror.txt

It actually could be that you have a hard disk going bad.

No, I use Arch, and disabled my root account for security purposes

I use sudo or sudo -s for everything.

EDIT: If you are root then the file is in /root/booterror.txt. /root is unreadable to users, so just do exactly the following:

su -
cp booterror.txt /home/Daniel
chown Daniel /home/Daniel/booterror.txt

And it should be in your home.

[Daniel@dhcppc2 ~]$ su
Password:
[root@dhcppc2 Daniel]# cp booterror.txt /home/Daniel
cp: `booterror.txt' and `/home/Daniel/booterror.txt' are the same file
[root@dhcppc2 Daniel]# chown Daniel /home/Daniel/booterror.txt
[root@dhcppc2 Daniel]#

Sorry this goes so slowly! LOL I'm really not very good at this...to say the lest...":O}
I have a /home/Daniel/booterror.txt but it is a Zero bite file. I tried rebooting in the hopes of it gatherering data for us...but it remains zero bites...?

I also tried this one line at a time:

[Daniel@dhcppc2 ~]$ su
Password:
[root@dhcppc2 Daniel]# cp booterror.txt /home/Daniel
cp: `booterror.txt' and `/home/Daniel/booterror.txt' are the same file
[root@dhcppc2 Daniel]# chown Daniel /home/Daniel/booterror.txt
[root@dhcppc2 Daniel]#

I found a System log viewer, is this what we are looking for? It's a bit long ...three posts... The buffer errors are near the bottom of the last one. it may help you to know that I boot fron a ATA IDE133 card, not from on board IDE. The START of the SECOND post has the

Daniel, I think from that you either have a bad / dislodged cable on one of your hard disks, or the drive is going bad. Those are the only two options at this point.

Can you do a:

df -h

in a terminal, and we'll see which one is the problem. (its sdd but I'm not sure which disk it is exactly)
