Need Programming Help

Well this is gonna sound retarded...b/c it is but what cani do to reteach myself some programming. I would like to get back into this. I used to do it in High SChool but it was VERY BASIC, like Turbo pascal, and i started C+ but went nowhere, due to the fact i graduated and never used it.

Is C+ a good place to start, and is the ONLY way you can learn it in a class? I mean can i get the software, and literature and start learning that way. Please be totally honest liek if i have no chanve self teaching myself then tell me, so i dont waste my time and dont sugar coat it PLEASE.

IF not C= then what other program languages, are not to bad to start on?

I hear of like Oracle? (sp) alot but have no clue how difficult that is, and i GOT SQL server and no clue how to use it.

gimme some sites and suggestions, along with book titles i might wana pick up.

A good place to start with learning the syntax of if's and for's, etc, is Javascript. Then perhaps try C++. If you know C++, you can learn mostly any web language (except java perhaps) in a matter of an hour or so. C++ really isn't that hard to use. There's a free one; called Bloodshed C++ that I really like as an alternative to the Microsoft C++ compiler.

Best advice I can give you is work out what you want to program, in particualr the OS you want to program for, then start from there. Its no use wanting to program for Linux and learn VB. If want to program solely for windows then I'd recomend MS VB (the learning edition comes with 2 good books). Also if you learn VB and deceide you want to program server side apps for the web then its v easy to switch to ASP. However if you just want to program for the web i'd recomend PHP as thats supposedly better (also has another advantage is that it runs on linux and linux web hosting tends to be cheaper than windows).

If you could give us a little more insite into what you want to do then it would be a little easier to help

You don't need to be taught by a teacher to learn anything. In some ways you'll be better doing it on your own at your own pace, maybe if you found someone that could help or advise when you got stuck would be useful.

Also what ever you choose you'll want a good book to refer to now and again. Look arround and see which ones people recomend

Supposedly ASP will run on linux now too, we have some chiliasp thing on this server to run it. Does it work well, I don't know. But anyway, good points. You know what I'm waiting for? KBasic!

Yep, i know that ASP can be used on linux servers using the chiliasp and like you I have no idea how good it is.

As for KBasic i can't see myself ever using it as its for linux . I've tried using Linux twice (SUSE 6.4 & RedHat 7.2) but I just can't get into using it (i'm used to windows now) also most of the apps I like to use are windows only - looks like I'm stuck with MS (spare me now)

I had to get into using it, LOL. I've been screwing around with lots of MySQL stuff lately and it's easier for me if I can set it up on a computer in my house first, then transfer it to the server.

I found with Linux there just doesn't seem to be consistency. When you from one windows box to the next, it's very easy to pick up whats going on, everthing is where you expect it.

In linux, it's all over the place! There just doesn't seem to be any standards.

And why do you need linux to fiddle with MysQL? I have a MySQL server running on my WinXP box with PHP 4.1.2 and I do all the fiddling I want.

Because Linux is more of a challenge. And more fun too!
