I go to Spyder's school. Any one who has half a brain can get that damn vegian (sp? and no offence) pissed at you. He doesn't like me because I know more VB then he does, and he is the teacher. He's a total idiot. I joined the class 4 weeks late, and was caught up with the rest of the class with in two periods, and he was telling me that I was behind - after I turned all the assignments in. I am now so far ahead, he raindomly picks a page in the VB book for me to work on a random project. It really sucks.

Now, if only Spyder can get him fired...

Oh, and did we mention, he is a TOTAL control freak? He has all these monitoring programs on the computers, and locks us out of IE and stuff like that. GOD.

Just be glad you didn't have the IT teacher I had at school. Not only did this guy put together the network, but he also built the security system that protected the building, and logged who had signed in, when they signed in, as well as signing out...

LOL. The district systems administrator's "home base" is my school. One time, my friend decided that he was going to a) circumvent the admin's lousy attempts to hide the "S:" share, b) plop 8GB worth of MP3's, games, and "images" on the share, and c) play Quake 2 over the network during computer programming and in the library. Unfortunantly, he got caught, and his counselor was given a 22-page printout of all of the files in his folder he made on the share. He got busted big time; luckily, the principal and his subordinates don't know the first thing about computers, and hence didn't consider it a grievinous offense. He still got like 3 days suspension, though.

A kid who was in my computer programming teacher's class about 5 years ago visited once, and told us about the greatest idea I have ever heard to capture people's passwords. What he did was create a VB program that looked just like the Win95 login screen. Then, he'd load it, and someone would enter their username/password, and when they clicked login, it would save their info to a file, and then restart. Then they could login for real. Most of the people considered this a minor inconvience and didn't complain to the teacher about it. In about a week they had the passwords of practically everyone in the school. That's crazy.

OK, enough rambling for tonight. Can you tell I'm tired?

Fighting the "establishment" and all is fun now but let me warn you..... The people you are PLAYING with now will be replaced by bosses and supervisors & such in the future. It may serve you well to learn to comply with the bull s*** now ( without loosing your dignity) and play the game.
You will be playing this same game for the rest of your life.

Sorry to be so doom & gloom guys but it's a reality.

That's not completely true, but it is true enough for the majority of people. Some of us get lucky enough to become security consultants, and hence get to break all that lovely stuff and get paid for it.

In a number of companies I've seen, violation of the IT Security Policy is a sackable offense. Depending on how seriously you violate it, I've seen people fired on the spot.

hehe right on.... java is kinda neet though and it is *somewhat* fast after it starts up and its really only useful for cross platform applications

i need to learn more programming but the programming classes ive taken are to slow... so we almost never get past the stuff i already know (i took the best class they had too) and i never seem to have time to sit down and learn it via trial and error anyone have any suggestions..... should i write a program that reminds me to write 1 program a day??

I've been learning java at uni all year. Now comes the test of how much i've learnt. The 3 hour long java exam in 3 hours time! It's only worth a quarter of the year's mark. gulp.

Sounds like the computer admin for the Chem Eng department at uni. Brum uni's computers are deliberately wide open so that there's no incentive to hack them (it's just too easy). The only restrictions are the network login (to protect your email) and a bit of s/w on the gateway to block pr0n. Besides that, all's fair.

But not in Chem Eng, oh no. It's on its own private server, attached to the rest of the network in "paranoid mode". At first glance it's pretty tight - none of the computers have any "system" tools on there. You're not even supposed to be able to format a floppy disc.

But the world's biggest security loophole has been installed on this system, allowing a user with only basic computing skill (me) to circumvent all the admin's best efforts: Word 97

Guess you're looking in the wrong places then.. Java can be pretty darn fast, and runs in small places too. I have a machine with a 40MHz processor, and 512KBytes of memory. It runs Java fine.
