This is a great FAQ, and I'm sure it will be useful to many. However, I was under the impression that the SMP client was SUPPOSED to be optimized for 4 cores already? ![]() |

My assumption was the same, but it just never really loads my rig. So I figured I would give it a shot and it increased my output by 1000 ppd.

Daniel, don't mean to hijack the thread but... For the Linux-impaired it might be a good idea to add something about using two clients in Windows on quad-cores, as per this post about third-party affinity software: Windows SMP Client, general troubleshooting

Hi ThunderRd! Due to the limits of our forum software... the easiest way to get you post into our FAQ (where it belongs!) is if you would copy it, repost it and send me a PM with it's url... otherwise I'm editing for an hour and it still looks like poo. So please just copy it, and repost it then I can grab it in a way that looks decent.":O}

I got it in email from a friend, truthfully it's one of those deals where there aren't that many ways of doing it. But it does look too close to dude's post so it should be removed. I will have a little chat with the sender of the email, and edit the first post with the link to the original post.

I just got off the phone with my bro and he said (when he finished laughing) that if copying the folding at home guide twice and then adding the use of taskset which is included in util-linux with every distro is intellectual property he would just go back to using windows. Our initial phone conversation was pretty simple, make 2 folders, install 2 fah clients, then taskset. I said cool and did it, he sent me some text and I put it up..

Did you really need your friend to tell you... you didn't notice somebody else wrote this? "My system has been working fine for a while so I decided to share this with everyone. It will not work perfect for everyone and the results will vary so proceed with caution and at your own risk. After reading this and other discussions aboutwindows and VM I decided to find a way to isolate the clients using only *Ubuntu because Windows and VM create more overhead and windows cost $$$. This is a *ubuntu guide only no Windows or Virtual Machine.It is intended to help PCs that have an Intel Quad core processor and at least 2Gigs of RAM. " and this Configure it like a normal SMP client with the exception of two advanced options. #1 "Memory, in MB, to indicate (2018 available) [2042]" This might not be important but I set mine to half of my system's total RAM because it seems right. I have 2Gigs of RAM which is really 2048mb (notice only 2042 its normal so don't freak out.) I set mine to 1024. #2 "Machine ID (1-16) [1]?" Each client must have a different Machine ID. I use machine ID 1 for the FAH1 client and machine ID 2 for the FAH2 client to keep things simple! I hope you think twice before you copy stuff and try to pawn it off as your own next time.

Like I said I apologize for posting up your work, I always give credit to those I steal material from. Check my Gentoo guide. Let it go, I didn't care where it came from, it gave me a slight improvement in my folding ventures, figured I would share what text I got to help others and benifit the fold..

Oh, my. Getting hot in here. I'm in those community forums at least once a day. I read a lot of them, and there are many posts regarding this topic. My own feeling is that 99% of those guys would love to help others. Guess this shows we have to be more careful than I thought. Don't worry about the Windows how-to's, Sam, I thunk 'em up meself.

SO.... Now that we have blown off some steam....I will try to sort this out... DId you write this? If so, I will give you the credit. We always try to make sure the credit goes to the right person or establishment. Let me know how it is and it will be fixed. I really do not care who wrote it. It can prove to be helpful and I will put the owners name on the front page as needed. Sam
